High up/down speed ISP?

Recommended Posts

I'm currently looking into setting up a number of dedicated servers, after the provider of my current dedicated server decided that they wanted to completely re-invent themselves (read, prices going up from about ?10 per month to ?60).

In terms of the hardware side of things, and actually setting up and running the servers, I'm fine. It's just getting them online that I'm not so sure about- the servers they're replacing were running with 100Mbps up and down speeds, and my domestic broadband really isn't going to cut it. (Or even lightly scratch it for that matter..)

Are there any ISPs that provide this sort of service in the UK? (And if so, how much am I looking at in terms of cost?)

I've been considering hosting my own servers for quite a while now, given the limitations in terms of upgrading the components of rented servers, and the change of price plans was pretty much the final straw.

I've seen a few threads on a similar topic here over the past couple months.  I'm really curious as to what it is people need dedicated servers hosted from home for that something like Windows Azure couldn't host for them?  This is genuine intrigue, I'm not trying to force cloud hosting down your throat !

So you want 100Mbps up in your home, and think its going to be cheaper then the 60 quid a month your old host prices went too?  Really?  Good Luck with that ;)

What I would suggest is find a new host.. I have server in EU that is 10 quid a month, and it has 10GE connection down and 500Mbps up.. With a 2TB limit on upload and no limit on download.

Other than a vpn type connection into your home to access your personal stuff while your away, say fix something on a computer for a family member.  Maybe grab a small file you forgot, and is not synced to the cloud..  It makes no sense to provide any sort of services to the public or even a limited audience from the home.. It just doesn't - For starters just the elec cost of running the hardware 24/7/365 adds up..   Most home connections are very limited on the upload side.. So speeds are going to suck compared to hosting it offsite..

Hosting services in a home setting is just not a good idea..  Just isn't no matter how you try and slice it - your going to get faster/better/cheaper services hosting your services in a DC designed for just that.  Be it dedicated hardware/shared/VPS/etc.. -- if you don't like your current host, shop around there a gazillion freaking places to host services on the net.

Erm, a few things to be honest- obviously there are the usual benefits of setting up your own webhosting, ftp, remote backup etc, but I do have a few other uses for them.

I always tend to keep one running as a seedbox, and I'm planning on using a few of them as a small render farm.

There's also a number of fairly large game servers running too.

Oh don't get me wrong, I'm not expecting to be paying the same price that I'm paying now- I just figured that if I'm going to end up paying a small fortune for this, I might as well use my own servers, and have complete control over what I can and can't do with them.

And ah, which host do you use? I'm going to take a wild guess here and say Feral Hosting? I did check them out, but I was put off by the fairly erm.. thin looking site?

I was hosting with OVH/Kimsufi before, but they're pretty lackluster in terms of the quality of their service, and their price plan (The one major advantage that they had over the other hosts) has now gone out of the window.

^ Sat??  Where do you think they would have high upload?  And the latency is going to be horrific ;)  And they normally have really small total bandwidth limits.. No sat would not be the way to go at all!

"but I was put off by the fairly erm.. thin looking site?"  So you didn't like their website so you take it their hosting sucks? hehehe  Ok total sense  Why don't you grab a month, which you can do and have a server in like 30 seconds.. And give it a run and see how it works.

As to total control that would be what a VPS gets you, I have never seen a VPS offered that did not give you root.  And there are plenty of places that are less than 60 quid a month.

Pretty much any satellite connection will have a high up/down speed.

lol if you consider 15/2 high, then sure.. but "high" I would consider anything above 50 down and 10 up at a minimum.

10 up for a seedbox that he mentions - pretty ###### one ;)  And "large" game servers -- yeah with what 2 or 3 players?  Render farm?  So lets render something that I would assume be of decent size... and then upload that to who rendered it via a 10mbit pipe shared with the seed box, and games running.,

I really don't think 10 would be anywhere near what that should have..

So -- just for grins, since I have no idea what a 100mbit connection would cost in the uk.. I found

http://www.hso.co.uk/leased-lines/

So all you had to do was put in a uk postal code and what speed you wanted and could get a quote.. So put in EC1A 1BB which was an example on wikipedia -- so for 100mbit line looks like 500 Quid a month.. You can get quite a few dedicated servers for that cost ;)

Generally speaking, if a site looks like it's been put together in Word, contains very little information about the servers, what they're running, how much control you have over them, and to be quite honest, nothing to suggest that it's actually a legitimate, reliable hosting company, then yeah. I am going to be a little hesitant about parting with my cash.

So for starters the site was not put together with word - I feel it is very clean and easy to read without all the nonsense eye candy.  But each their own -- why don't you ask chuck about his experience sofar with them - he signed up..  Guess he was willing to risk a whole 10 quid.. I don't know google the company if you have concerns..

I use them - are you saying I would send you somewhere that was not good?  I take offense at that to be honest ;)
