Surround Sound Chillout/Ambient Music

Recommended Posts

Hi Neowinians,

I was listening to some of my solarsoul MP3s on forced (fake) 5.1 surround sound. I was wondering if there was any true surround sound music produced? (in particular ambient/chillout) I thought it would be great to have some space/ambient tracks that actually 'moved' around you as you listened.

Thanks :)

edit: I do realise MP3s actually can't be surround sound, so would be looking for some FLACs or something.

flacs are just the cd compressed into a lossless format, wont make stereo into 5.1 either

unless the audio your getting is 5.1 like say off a dvd

I thought flac was loseless, as in not compressed in anyway. Ripped accurately. Converting it to something like MP3 (lossy) compresses it. Happily corrected.

Just because something is compressed, does not mean it is lossy. If that were the case, zip archives would be terrible.

Wiki says its a compression format. .WAV 48khz files would be way larger (but neither compressed or lossy).

Ahh, cool. Learnt something. Thanks, Shadrack. :)

I would imagine there would be ambient music that would take advantage of surround sound. I just have some rain/aquarium mp3s which I use to fall asleep. I can't sleep in silence, it is deafening.

Hearts of Space is pretty good. (https://www.hos.com/#programs/recent)

Drone Zone on SOMA FM is also pretty good (but can be somewhat repetitive).

If you are looking for non-specific ambient music that is.

I can't think of any albums that are in 5.1 surround, but I'm sure there are some out there.

I'm also fairly certain that the MP3 format can handle 5.1 surround.  Wikipedia says it does as of the MPEG-2 Layer III standardization '95/'98.

Actually prog rock but Porcupine Tree are one of the few bands I know that actually likes 5.1 mixes, all the 5.1 mixes were release on DVD-A formats.
