If you were to go to a gaming tournament, what are the must have?

Recommended Posts

The title says it all.  This is not a Poll :p.

In general, what do you like to see on Tournaments or what are "the must have"?

Includes for PC, and Console gaming tournaments.

Are gaming tourneys really so disgusting? I've never attended one, but by the sounds of it, hand sanitizer? :p

Anyway, why is the OP interested in this?

To find out the bare minimum essential things to carry.

Sorry, it is 2:30pm Friday and it is a hot out here and my sarcasm is kicking in.

A pillow because you're going to be sitting a lot.

If you're participating, don't forget your hardware: controllers, etc.

Light jacket if anything, something you can wrap around your waist and doesn't become uncomfortable.

Maybe some eye drops if you're going to be starting a long time at a monitor.

Trail mix or some other salty/nutty snack you can eat by the handful.

Vitamin Water. (Shameless plug? Nah...)

Extra cash. Because someone is going to be selling something really cool that you didn't plan for.

3DS, if you have one. Those are the best places for Streetpass!

Any serious ideas?

I'm confused whether you're asking from a "I'm hosting a tournament what essentials do I need to provide?" or a "I'm going to a tournament what essentials must I take?"

"I'm hosting a tournament what essentials do I need to provide?" This! ;)

Hahaha. Sorry jamieakers for not being clear! Yup. I'm making a video game tournament and I'd like to listen what do people like and don't like about it.

It will be a League of Legends Tournament.

Most LANs I've been at, all rules get thrown out the window when it comes to LoL because majority of the LoL community is like the WoW community which means they LoL all day and deodorant, hygiene, etc are all thrown out the window.

But definitely hygiene, courtesy, respect, etc. All types of people go to LANs and most of my experiences have been good till admins don't give a ###### if someones blaring speakers after being told to not bring speakers to a LAN. Other things are when people are just outright ###### and admins don't do anything, yet if you "fight" back, you get banned / kicked out.

LANs are all about getting together with the community you love and being in one room, but some people either don't understand the social aspect of it, or are just idiots thinking its going to be any different then sitting at home on their computer and playing over the internet.

- Up to date installations of the game along with the operating systems and the ability to install all required updates and drivers for players' own hardware.

- OSes updated and secured so players can log in safely.

- Analysis desk, if you want to dive deep into analysing play-by-play, a game, or a series in general.

- Food and drinks, and chill out areas.

- Casters with good experience and high bandwidth capabilities of the whole area for streaming, if you're doing this to stream the tournament on Twitch.

- Host as well as translator, again if you're streaming this for a particular audience.

- Comfortable chairs, especially needed for those long BO5 / BO7 series.

- Help players find hotels, motels, places they could rent to spend the nights during the days the tournament lasts.

- A good price pool, make it worth the players' expenses, as many of them could just play online for free for a better price pool.

Is this a serious tournament, or a bring-your-lappy LAN party with friends?

elenaire. This is the real deal. The cost of producing this tournament is around 10,000$. I'm looking for sponsorship for helping me fund this event.

THanks a lot for the tips!

If it is about 10K, then you probably don't need a translator, multiple casters and analysis desk. The caster/s and the host/s could maybe be the same people if budgets are tight. ESL's studio in Cologne is probably a good example of a small-event studio (though they've been known to do 100K+ EUR tournaments as well). You don't need much space and all that as long as everything is neatly done. As long as you've everything done from the technical side, this includes 10-15 computers (since you mentioned LOL which I'd assume it would be 5v5 you would need 10 systems at minimum), depending on how you want to handle the spectating, analysis, and commentating, and the usual networking / audio installations (microphones, sound isolation if teams are going to be close to each other).

Maybe some fridges with sandwiches and drinks can cover up the chill areas... also making the downtime between games a bit more relaxing. Take a look at the Seatstory and Homestory cups, they do everything in just one apartment and still have place for relaxing and eating and whatever, due to how they're organised. But they're doing Hearthstone and Starcraft, so the number of players participating is a bit lower.

Thanks man :)

One more thing. Does someone know what Internet setup is best?

I'll be having two games simultaneously (5 vs 5) which means there will be 20 computers playing at the same time, and two of them making the stream via Twitch.

How powerful the Internet needs to be? What's the best setup to do so?
