At the 2014 India auto show, Renault has brought a concept car called KWID, featuring its own drone. The small flying camera emerges out of the roof and, in automatic mode, hovers above the car offering a bird's-eye-view of your surroundings, while displaying the images on the all-electric CUV's touchscreen. In manual mode, the automaker claims you can control the drone from within the car, making it the perfect tool for checking out when the traffic lets up. Or spying on your fellow motorists.

Finally, third-person view for real-life driving.

Doubt this will be allowed in most places unless it is fully automated and no manual controls.

That was my first thought. We have spent so long telling drivers to not multi-task while behind the wheel, this won't get far if there are manual controls available.

Also, how does this work? Does it charge while sitting in the car? What's the conceptual range of the drone, and what will happen if a user takes the drone out of range?

Agree.

If we want this to happen, they are doing it the wrong way:

First we have to prepare the roads for automatic driving, THEN we prepare the cars for automatic driving. We are doing it wrong.

The problem with all these cool concepts is that they are rarely put into production. The drone could be useful when you're stuck in a traffic jam or something.

None of this is a new concept. I don't even know why people are calling this a drone unless its fully automatic and intelligent. Otherwise its just like one of those model planes. They are controlled using radio waves so range depends on transmitter strength but could be a few kilometers at lest. And what happens when it goes out of range? Simple. It retraces its path back until its back in signal zone. Attach a coil to the base and install one of them Qi compatible charging plates on the roof of the car and voila. I could make one for my own car if I thought it served some purpose.
