Slipstrem Windows 8.1

Recommended Posts

Is it possible in any way, shape, or form? Any ISO's I can get (preferably a legal way)? Any software out there like nlite I can use? I know MS is hell bent on us downloading those particular updates from the Windows store but I want a less time consuming method

Winreducer 8.1

A powerful and reliable software solution that enables users to customize any ISO of Windows 8.1 so as to obtain a tweaked installer package

Tech-savvy users might often choose to customize various functions of the operating system they are running on their computer, yet they could save time if they could create a personalized installer where the aforementioned functions would already be modified. And this is where WInReducer 8.1 comes in handy.

The application can be used solely on PCs running Windows 8.1 and it can only customize Windows 8.1 ISOs. If you want to try it on Windows 8, you can download WinReducer 8.

Ironically I was just looking at Winreducer when I read your post. So it can slipstream the 8.1 update into Windows 8 and creat a new ISO file? And if it can does anybody know where I can download just the 8.1 update from?

Do this:

1) Go here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/upgrade-product-key-only

2) Download program from the Install 8.1 link on that page: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?LinkId=271128

3) Go through the screens and put your key in.

4) You'll get a screen that says 'Install Now' 'Install from media' or 'Install later from desktop' - choose 'Install Media'.

5) On the next screen check the 'iso file' button.

6) Victory.

So when I went to put in my key it said "This product key didn't work. Check it and try again". Isn't that because I technically own a copy of 8.0 and not 8.1 and so my key will only work with 8.0? Could be totally wrong but I thought I read that somewhere...

Soooo I went to this guide http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/download-microsoft-windows-and-office/download-microsoft-windows/download-windows-8-1-iso and when I went to plug in my product key I got this message "This product key cannot be used to install a retail version of Windows 8", I'm using a OEM version so I suppose that explains the message... Anymore ideas?

You have to install it with one of the generic product keys:

?334NH-RXG76-64THK-C7CKG-D3VPT for Core/Home*

?XHQ8N-C3MCJ-RQXB6-WCHYG-C9WKB for Professional

(These can be found in a file on the install media but I forget what it's called.)

After you install, go the system control panel (Control Panel\System and Security\System) and click "Change product key" in the lower-right corner and put your Windows 8.0 upgrade key in. You can then activate it.

That key worked! But now when it goes to the next screen it says "We can't connect right now. Check your internet connection and try again."...

Just have a look there. Find the right edition/language you need, click details and Google the file name or the hash. You'll probably find a way to download it. Check the hash after downloading it and you're set. Windows images by themselves aren't really illegal content anyway since they don't activate without a legit key. As long as you make sure to get the original images anyway.

Is that during the installation or after first boot? If it's the latter you may need to either install your motherboard's network drivers or run Windows Update before you activate.

If all else fails you can use phone activation. It only takes a few minutes and they've generally only asked me if it was an OEM or retail license.

During installation. I'm at the screen where I put the product key in and when I click next is when I get that error.

Hmm... does it not give you the option of skipping and activating later?

This would never work. 8.1 is not something to slipstream. Its an entirely new OS that's branded as an update. This isn't like going from SP0 to SP1 its a whole new OS. Its too soon to see how the 8.1 update 1 is going to be. My hope is its slipstreamable.

My bet is that it won't be.

Nope... Honestly this is to much trouble to be worth it and I'm just going to torrent the ISO... I am a bit worried about one other thing though. My copy is an OEM version of 8.0 Pro, will my product key work with anything I grab as long as it's a Pro version?

I'm not sure, but I think the torrent ISOs are the same as the one you can download with the tool from Microsoft's site.

If it's an OEM copy that came on a branded pre-built computer it will only activate if you have the certificate from the manufacturer on the drive. The keys that are printed on the attached label for volume OEM copies don't come up as valid without that file.

Nope, it's the full OEM disc. Just wish this wasn't such a pain but I do understand that 8.1 was pretty much a new OS so slipstreaming it just isn't an option. But hey thanks guys for all your help as always! There's a reason why I've been here for almost twelve years now haha and that's all the great help I've gotten!

I haven't looked at WinReducer yet, but since Win7 launched I'm making my own sources and using DSIM, included in the Windows Deployment and Assessment Toolkit, to slipstream updates every month and keep my installation sources up to date. With Windows 8 and 8.1 it's the same procedure.

Sometimes I miss the good old nLite and the way XP managed slipstreaming, though.

I hear ya there! I know the guy that made nLite said he's developing a new version but it'll be a while before we see anything.

It's great to know that. Meanwhile, I will give WinReducer a try to see if it can somehow make what I do more easily or quicker.

So I used my key on the 8.1 ISO I got and it didn't work, so I then used the above key and it let me continue. What I'm really wanting to know now before I press on is if the above method works once I get it installed? I just don't want to install it to find out it doesn't work and end up having to redo it all again and revert back to what I had. Again thanks for any help guys!

If you're able to get it installed with the generic key for the proper version corresponding to the key you bought it should be fine. If it doesn't for some reason you can you should be able to use the slmgr.vbs script from an elevated command prompt:

slmgr.vbs /upk
slmgr.vbs /ipk <your key>
slmgr.vbs /ato
The first removes all keys, the second installs yours, the third activates. If it fails you may have used the wrong install key. There's a way to switch but it's a pain in the rear.

DON'T reboot after you remove the current keys with /upk or it may not boot anymore. You need to do at least the first two steps in one session.
