4 TB HDD WD

So I am thinking of getting another Hard drive, since newegg has one on a promotion for valentines at $170  it's  a 4 TB,   (western digital)  or there is a 3 TB hard drive $120     (Western digital)   I am eventually going to set up my security software in the summer I have a security camera, and figure I will store video .   What do you guys think about Western digital?  And 3 or 4 TB?    I currently have a 2 TB   hdd , and have 1 TB left.  So this will be mainly for video and backup, unless I run out of space haha which won't be soon ...

Id say go the 4TB and spend the little extra, if you dont end up using it all data wise then just partition it and use a section of the disk for something else.

The WDs have a longer warranty for the large capacity drives than Seagate last I checked, so I'd tend to trust them a bit more. Though last I checked the reviews on TB sized mechanical drives from all brands were pretty lackluster though...

The two drives are from different series (I have the Newegg newsletter too), the 3TB is the Red series and the 4TB is the Green (AV-GP) series. Both do have a 3 three warranty though.

 

I would likely go for the 4TB simply because the reviews for all of WD's Red series drives are not very inspiring. Yes I know that giving too much weight to Newegg reviews is bad, but still...

Green drives tend to be rather slow in read/write speeds, just FYI.  Reds are a good mix of price and performance, and blacks are for all out speed with large capacity.  Either way you go I would stick with WD as all of seagate's manufacturing is in china now and their warranty is only 1 year which tells me the drives are crap, and I've had seagates fail quite often in the past.

yeah. I had a segate drive and it failed and the company wouldn't repair it... soo yeah Just want a good brand if I buy something big like this

I've always been very happy with WD and their green drives are just fine for backups or using as media servers. If you can afford it I would go for the 4TB.

 

and I agree, I wouldn't touch Seagate with a barge pole.

If you have 1TB left on your current drive and you plan on using more space (CCTV doesn't really take too much to store, specially when motion detection is enabled) go for it. Having said that, take into account that the more storage we have, the more we tend to put on it and many people still don't backup their data.

 

I just had two drives failed on me (2TB and 1TB). I had backups of everything and I just went with 3TB+2TB to allow more space for backups given that I'm adding 2TB more than I had and I will sotore some backups on the new drive because my backup drive won't have that much space to work.

 

If you don't have backups, go with the 4TB drive and use it as a backup drive for the things you want to store from the 2TB you have. If you already have backups and don't need that much space, save the $50 and take the 3TB. In the end it all depends on needs.
