I tried liking MUI, loved the cool modern look to begin with especially with desktop background enabled. But then I started to find very distracting and annoying, routine tasks just took longer and I couldn't be bothered spending time customising it. Gave in and installed Classic Shell.

I have Windows 8 and I like the modern UI, but I wish it was more integrated with the desktop side of things. The newest update to Windows 8.1 seems like it is working on those issues. I don't think it'll be fully integrated until Windows 9 though.

I was waiting for this poll to pop up after somebody else in another thread mentioned that Windows 8 was actually well liked

And some how when I saw the title I knew it was going to be from Warwagon

The Metro haters can't wrap there head around it that people actually like Windows 8.

Even this poll shows that the majority still has no issue with Metro/Modern UI

Give it up guys!

By majority you mean a difference of 3 votes or 3%

Majority means 50%

Use Windows 8, don't use Modern UI for anything. I also don't have any third party start menu installed as the built-in Start Button right-click menu is all that I need.

I actually thought you started the poll at first, but I'm glad you stuck by your word and didn't. :)

 , nah, it would have been too much for me to think about in terms of poll responses (it would have taken me like 3 hours to be satisfied with whatever I came up with). I really think the idea of forum polling doesn't work very well anyway for this topic since the only respondents are going to be us forum folk.

Yeah, I don't think the OP read through the full discussion and decided to create a poll anyway. Maybe if I can be bothered then I'll post a poll somewhere with users that aren't tech savvy, but I can't be bothered doing it right now because I'm lazy. :p

I like Modern UI, I just find myself using desktop m ore for some reason. Maybe because of years of habit.

I think Warwagon just really like doing polls on neowin (from his record here)! You'd think there would have been to be a poll like that somewhere already, but I guess if you go to a non tech savvy crowd, that type of thing is uninteresting.

I'm sure he does. :) There is, but they all seem to be from tech sites like Neowin and you're right non-tech savvy users probably don't care, which is why it's hard to find that sort-of poll.

I do really like polls. Yes someone should find a non-technical site and create a poll. Wish Facebook would let me

Why don't you use PollDaddy?

I don't expect any trolling here - I'm just stating my situation.

Windows 8 was the straw that broke the camels back for me and forced me into reconsidering alternatives - I ended up first building a Hackintosh and then 6 months later just buying an actual Mac and I'm not exaggerating when I say it was one of the best decisions I ever made. I love it, and I love OSX.

However it's just easier for me to use Windows at work, so I do. I ran Windows 8 for a while, hated it, and went back to Windows 7. Windows 8.1 came out and I thought I'd give it another go and I must be honest say overall I do prefer it, and have been happily using it for about 4 months now I guess and am reasonably happy with it. But I just can't get on with, nor can I understand the logic behind, the Modern UI / Metro start screen onto desktop PC's. I've used it on Tablets, and you know I'm even contemplating ditching my Android tablet and buying a Windows 8.1 / Windows 8.1 RT tablet as I like it a lot more there - but on the desktop it just drives me up the freaking wall.

I'm fully willing to accept it might be me being too dyed-in-the-wool and being used to the traditional Start Menu type arrangement but despite many months using it at work I just don't see the point of it. I hate Start Screen 'widgets', I hate full screen applications launched within the Start Screen and I just think the whole thing is a disaster on a desktop PC.

I'm really hoping for some new ideas and new directions from Microsoft's new CEO. I want to believe in, and like Microsoft again.

If you look at the 2nd question, the most popular answer is still, I like the Modern UI, by a long shot

I would call that the majority of the answers

I'm repeating myself, but you are misinterpreting the poll. Four of the options for question 2 are dislikes of the Modern UI or some aspect of it and when added together they make up ~50+ votes (currently).

Here is a poll I created for the average user. Please do not vote on this poll if you are a member of this site. Instead send to your non techie friends and have them vote. Or maybe put it on your facebook page.

http://polldaddy.com/poll/7788737

You will noticed I referred to the start screen as the "Screen with squares and rectangles" instead of calling it by it's true name. The average user does not know that screen is called the "Start Screen" ... a lot of my customers call it the desktop. So I think calling it just the screen with "Squares and rectangles" should be good enough.

The poll expires in 1 week.

Strange I gave it to 2 of my contacts (who i've never talked to about windows 8) and Neowin. The poll now has 2 dislikes and 11 likes.

A reminder to please play fair and do not vote.

It just has to be said that Microsoft removing the F8 safemode (Shift +F8 SOMETIME works) has got to be the single STUPIDEST thing they could have done. Yes you can create a USB recovery Drive. If you read Microsoft guides about how to get into safe mode Most of them reference doing it from INSIDE WINDOWS> The whole god damn point of safe mode is because the COMPUTER WON'tT START!.

Yea never much understood that one either.  (I love Microsoft's explanation.. PC's boot too fast anyways so why have it right? Forehead, meet keyboard.)  That said, you can add safe mood to the boot menu via BCDEdit, but that's kind of silly not having the option there to begin with.. shift-F8 is a crapshoot if you get it in time.

Exactly, if a customer is having issues with their PC I can no longer walk them through safe mode over the phone.

Right now I have a customers PC that has 8.0 and I updated the intel drivers but when I install 8.1 on the final boot it goes black. I have 8.1 drivers that I think I can install from safe mode but I can't get there.

I tried enabling it at the command prompt but I just keep getting element not found. I made a recovery USB but it's missing the start up options.

I've liked the Modern ui of 8.0/8.1 since it was released on October 26th 2012--I use Modern ui daily for the email app, xbox music, xbox video to watch personal videos or such,  occasional dvd thru Media center on Desktop mode,  usually have Skype snapped or xbox music or something.    Can't wait til the 8.1 update 1 changes, and hopefully can set it back to boot to start screen on my NON touch Desktop, and enjoy the update while still enjoying my Modern Applications and Desktop Applications

Accessing Safe Mode in Windows 8.0 and 8.1

Goto Charms bar

Click on Restart, Hold down Shift key

From the Window that opens, select trouble shooting

Select Advance Options, then start up settings

select safe mode from the boot options

to restart in regular mode once done in Safe mode, just restart as normal

To get to safe mode in Windows 8.0/8.1,  Hold down Shift and left click on restart in Power option on Modern start screen, once it restarts, click on Startup settings I believe it is, then 4 for Safe Mode is last button before it boots into Safe mode

We know how to access Safe Mode. The problem is what if we cannot reach the login screen?
