McBook Pro freezes when I connect to projector

A coworker of mine has a McBook Pro 13" that works fine until I connect it to a projector. I am using an Apple adapter to VGA for the projector. As soon as I plug it in, the laptop freezes completely and needs to be rebooted, even if I unplug the cable. No picture ever shows up on the projector.

 

I've used the same adapter and projector successfully several times with my own McBook Pro 15" and a couple of others, including a PC, so I don't think there's anything wrong with the adapter or cable or projector.

 

Any idea on what could be causing the freezing?

It sounds like it has to be either driver issue (corrupted driver is causing the system to hang) or the port is bad. Does that port work with anything else?
