Colorado woman decided to breastfeed a puppy in an effort to save its life, a debate about the appropriateness of her actions with the orphaned animal quickly ensued. The unidentified woman posted a photo of the breastfeeding puppy on Facebook and noted that what she did is considered taboo, but claimed she was desperate to save the dying animal.

“I just felt like he just had an hour left. That’s how weak he was, he wasn’t moving and I just did it. I didn’t know what else to do, I was desperate and I just couldn’t bear sitting there watching it die. Literally what clicked in my head was like, put him on you, just pray to God he will take something and not die. The dog is alive because I took that initiative.”

The orphaned puppy allegedly would not accept a bottle nipple or K-9 formula. Within 24 hours of the breastfeeding puppy story hitting the local news, thousands of folks commented about the incident, including hundreds of animal rescuers. Some posters chastised the woman for saying that she did not want public backlash over her decision and then taking and sharing photos of herself breastfeeding the puppy online.

National Mill Dog Rescue member Cheryl Evans was initially “shocked” when she heard about the Colorado woman giving breast milk to a puppy.

Evans said:

“Because it’s not something we would typically hear of someone doing. When I actually viewed the whole story and took into consideration what would I do if I had the same opportunity and was presented with the same situation … like I said, I would do anything I could to help a baby [dog] to survive. It’s almost like you can’t explain what if it means for your heart. It’s rewarding to hear that you’re helping such a helpless being.”

The woman who breastfeed the orphaned puppy still feels that she did the right thing. “I can’t let criticism bring me down when I did something right and I saw the results,” she added.

Posting a photo on facebook probably wasn't necessary. I'd think that most initial reactions to this would be ones of disgust.

However, if you give it thought, it's not much different than humans drinking bovine milk. It also appears to have saved a life and created a strong bond.

Maternal instinct is a very powerful thing. In this case, it has even overpowered the pain caused by puppy's teeth biting the ######.

Meh, It's her perogative.  You can't really say it's WRONG, can you?  You can say you wouldn't do it yourself.. and that you don't like it.. but there is no reason that it is wrong.

Honestly, this reminds of the grapes of wrath. Live and let live. If the puppy (or evidently the entire litter :-p) were dying it was morally right. We don't get disgusted when we see a lil piglet nursing from a mama dog do we (or the other way around)?

Obligatory photos: http://piglovers.wor...-nurses-piglet/ Disgusting!!!

I admire her courageous action; although she could have anticipated the mixed reactions the Facebook post would trigger; given the amount of ignorant people who'd rather see the puppy dead than see a woman doing everything she can to save a soul.

Beautiful and depressing at the same time.

Whilst its rather unusual if there were no alternative I see no issue in saving the puppy life I would have thought public sentiment would have been on her side. With regard to people objecting to the act well the world is full of acts of horror and hatefulness posted on Facebook and other media websites every day so people need to get real this is really small beans in comparison.

I see no problem with it, but when those needle-like puppy teeth come in I see bottles and a breast pump in their future.

So is drinking cow milk? Milk is milk no matter what it came from.
