The Evil Within is no longer a summer game. Shinji Mikami and Tango Gameworks' survival horror adventure is now hitting just prior to Halloween on Oct. 21, publisher Bethesda Softworks announced today.

The game was originally scheduled for release on Aug. 26 in North America and Aug. 29 in Europe. The Evil Within is slated for simultaneous release on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Windows PC, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

The Evil Within is being developed at Tango Gameworks, the Tokyo-based studio that Mikami founded in March 2010. Bethesda's parent company, ZeniMax Media, acquired the studio in October 2010.

This game looks genuinely terrifying IMO, and not in the cheap monster closet way either.

Like if you took all the best parts of RE, Silent Hill and mixed it with Evil Dead and Texas Chainsaw.

Shinji Mikami is in his prime when he takes on the genre he pretty much godfathered so I have high hopes.

This game looks great, only thing that makes me a little weary (from reading the ign developer discussion) what the space time mechanics, eg whereby you are going to end up back at the asylum a lot.  Im sure they've done it well but in general I hate in games like this where I have to go over environments I've already been and finished the level for.

PAX East: How The Evil Within Fails at Horror
How silence compromises horror.
by Mitch Dyer
April 12, 2014

The Evil Within?s evocative environments effectively convey a sense of dread, lending meaningful weight to the psychological horrors happening around protagonist Sebastian. In a mysterious city full of zombie-like citizens hell-bent on murdering our hero, skyscrapers crumble, ascend into the sky, or close in around him.

It?s a magnificent spectacle. You or I would react with awe, disbelief, terror, shock, panic, and a range of other emotions that might display awareness of our surroundings. Sebastian never expresses anything about what?s happening to him. Somehow, he?s less invested in the mystery and horror here than me.

Sebastian?s disinterest in the events of The Evil Within completely robs it of its potential. His silence reduces the haunting atmosphere and scripted scares to empty parlor trickery.

It?s easy to appreciate Tango Gameworks? affinity for traditional video game horror. It?s tougher to take it seriously when The Evil Within wastes tension on recycled suspense scenes. It?s impossible to empathize with a character that has no concern for his mortality.

In the city section, The Evil Within fails to feel threatening at every turn. Sebastian is so empowered that it robs The Evil Within of any tension in combat. He?s able to obliterate oblivious enemies with his sniper rifle, shotgun, revolver, and a crossbow that can instantly freeze or explode targets. Power, like Sebastian?s silence, negates any fear. He expresses himself with his armory.

Maybe, at this point in The Evil Within, he?s seen enough to just roll with the punches. It?s possible he?s simply numb to seeing the same scares on repeat, like I am. I'd rather see The Evil Within have more emotion than excuses, and what I saw had neither.

Aesthetically, The Evil Within is superb, with gorgeous lighting and visual effects creating convincing, scary settings. The trouble is that Sebastian?s experiences within them are rigid and they repeat. It?s a genuine, heart-pounding moment the first time a monster manifests out of thin air and begins its relentless pursuit. Sebastian can solve the problem easily with a weapon or by closing a door behind him to end the chase. When the menacing enemy reappears, and Sebastian escapes/annihilates it, the fear vanishes. It?s sort of funny by the third or fourth time it happens.

I imagine Sebastian is rolling his eyes on the other side of that over-the-shoulder camera.

Well honestly despite that it's probably going to be 10x better than recent Resident Evil games. So a PC version is in the works and this game is not exclusive to any console it seems. Will the PC version release simultaneously with the console versions and any word yet if it'll be standalone, Steamworks or use another client/service?

It genuinely looks like it could become the next Resident Evil and we all remember the first Resident Evil wasn't exactly a marvel by any means. It had terrible voice acting and character responses but the sequels were improved slightly and the Remake was a definitive improvement from the original Saturn/PS1 version.

After reading some of the more recent previews it does seem like an RE4 successor more than typical survival horror.... Which I'll be okay with if there is a decent sprinkling of scares and good enemy designs. Some good creepy set pieces/level design would be good as well. At least they'll be no forced co-op to break SP immersion.

It always annoys me when horror themed movies/games etc don't release in October. It just seems like a missed opportunity to me when that is when the world goes "monster mad"

But at least it's only 2 months and not an entire quarter or more like The Order 1886.

True, forgot the horror/October connection. Just that it looks like a really dreary summer for gaming is coming up, barring any surprise launches. It is better than 1886 going "next year". That really hurt.
