Parental concern: Brian Viner was shocked his son had been involved in the Neknominate craze

A few days ago, my 15?year-old son Jake filmed himself mixing a cocktail in his own Wellington boot.

Those who saw his video on Facebook would have witnessed him adding cold baked beans, a raw egg and a third of a bottle of vodka, before mixing it together and knocking it back in one.

Welcome to the increasingly lethal world of Neknominate, which at the weekend claimed the lives of former grammar school boy Isaac Richardson, aged 20, and 29-year-old Stephen Brookes, from Cardiff. A week before it was linked to the death of two young men in Ireland.

The Neknominate craze has primarily spread on Facebook - where else? - like the deadliest of viruses.

The idea is that you film yourself drinking something horrible, then post the video online and nominate two friends to outdo you, giving them 24 or 48 hours to do so.

If anything, Neknominate acts as a further reminder that for all the advantages the internet has brought us, it also encourages intelligent people to do incredibly stupid and reckless things.

As a father of three, I find all this worrying in the extreme. Until last week I'd never heard of Neknominate, and certainly didn't know that my own son had partaken.

I was predictably horrified when I found out;. Jake had always seemed perfectly sensible about alcohol, and appeared to have taken to heart my warnings about teenagers drinking too much. So this seemed like a rare but spectacular transgression, terrifying proof of the dangers of social media.

I went to find him in his bedroom. 'Are you mad?' I exploded, having just seen the video. 'You could have killed yourself drinking something like that.'

His eyes filled with tears. 'I couldn't,' he said. 'It was just a joke. It wasn?t real.'

i say don't warn them.  it weeds out the morons.  Too bad the parent in this article didn't join him, especially for the comment 'jake had always seemed perfectly sensible about alcohol'.  Jake is freakin' 15 years old and should have NO sense about alcohol because Jake should never had been around alcohol in the first place.

Also adults take drink challenge on the facebook too. I watched them on facebook too. They are so stupid, and have tiny brain. I was not stupid to do that one.

I have a question for you, everyone...

Is hot dog contest same thing as drink challenge?  Are they both dangerous too?

Actually, I think you will find that in the UK, it is perfectly LEGAL for children to drink alcohol under certain circumstances!

The fact the kid was stupid enough to copy the craze, is silly in itself, but there is nothing to say the Father's comment wasn't actually true.

Let's hope one day you don't have a kid, and find they made a silly mistake and suffered consequences. Because, believe me, no matter how good you are at parenting, sometimes your child does do something stupid, and YOU will then know how hard being a parent really is, and you'll realise your statement above is rather crass.

People aged 16 or 17 may consume wine, beer or cider on licensed premises when ordered with a meal. In England and Wales, it must be an adult who orders;[95] however, an adult doesn't have to be present to order alcohol with a meal in Scotland.

If you're 5 or over and under 16, there is no legal restriction on you drinking alcohol at home or on other private premises.

It was originally "Drink something foul" - people were mixing milk and ketchup.  Idiots have turned it into "Down a litre of vodka".  If they wanted to do this, they'd find another catalyst.  Don't hate the game, hate the player!

So we should not warn kids about potential danger in life ? It's true after all we are all born with infinite knowledge about what is dangerous.

Not everyone know that drinking too much liquid in a short period of time can be dangerous (even water). I think it is perfectly fine to warn kids about this.

I don't know about hot dogs. But drinking too much water in a short period of time can be very dangerous.

hot dog contest, if you know what you are doing and have experience with hot dog contest in the past, then you are ok.

If it is a first time to do so, then you might throw up depends on your health. Talk with your doctor and see if you are good to go for hot dog contest.

Drink challenge...  it's dangerous if you drink too much in short time.   If you drink a little bit a time, which you take your time, that is ok.

I see many deaf people who blamed on other deaf people over the facebook, but one deaf man says that UK hearing people started it at first time, right?

No. The game isn't dangerous. Idiots being idiotic are dangerous. At it's simplest, neknominate is no more dangerous than necking a pint of beer in a pub.

I'm sorry but it's natural selection. If you think it's ok to neck a pint of 50% proof spirit, or some other toxic concoction, then you're an idiot and you're doing the future gene pool of humanity a favour. Take some responsibility for your own actions for frak's sake. The game does not dictate that you be a moron and do dangerous things, that is entirely your choice. The game is NOT at fault.

Well said, also to those saying we should warn youngsters......that's their parents job not mine or the media. End of the day this is (as said in the quoted post) a simple game and individual stupids are taking it too far, we can try to protect these idiots against this 'threat' but then there would be the next one, and the one after and the one after that. Sorry but someone I don't know doing an incredibly stupid thing that obviously has lots of risk and coming out of it in a bad way (or not coming out of it at all) doesn't concern me at all

Natural selection 2.0

At some point people will realise certain combinations are toxic and stop doing stupid things like this, if they don't then oh well their mother can have that knitting/sewing/hobby room she's always wanted :)

I don't see how a persons ability  to hear or not has any relevance to an idiotic craze that, like all crazes, will fade eventually...
