iPad Purchased at Pawnshop

Recommended Posts

Ok so my best friend purchased an iPad Mini from a pawn shop this weekend. Problem being when he got home he wanted to wipe it, but he can't wipe/restore the device because the find my device feature is enabled.  It requires either the AppleID to login or the last computer it was connected to.

He contacted AppleCare and they told him to scan a copy of the receipt and send it to them, which he did, but they said its not the original receipt from the purchase. Which of course its not, he bought it second hand from a pawn shop.

This is a legit purchase not a stolen device. I understand Apple is trying to cut down on stolen devices being re-used and I agree with it, but this is one of those 5% cases where it has a flaw.

My question. Is there any way around this? How can he wipe it and use his information, etc?

If you are running IOS 7 then unless you get on contact with the previous owner so he can delete that device from the list of devices in icloud.com your friend is out of luck :/

best is to return that iDevice and ask for a refund.

Pawnshop probably have the contact info of previous owner ..   might be lucky if the pawnshop guy can call that ex-ipad owner and see if he is willing to fix it. I guess.

When it asks him to login as the previous owner it should show their Apple ID, which is their email. He could try shooting an email off to them explaining that he's bought their iPad and they need to remove it from their account so he can take ownership of it.

Actually, scratch that. I did some reading up on this and it seems it only shows the first letter of the email address followed by asterisks.

Probably nothing you can do. DFU won't work and ios6 can't be reinstalled at this point. You need that password or its a brick. Does the phone have a lock screen password too? How are you sure it's not a stolen device.

yeah unless you can contact the owner it's pretty much done. I think it's best to return to the pawnshop and ask for a refund.

see again while I understand Apple's reasoning for putting in the Find My iPhone feature, they need better education I guess. I know the previous owner SHOULD have wiped the ipad. If they did that, it would have told them to disable the feature and shown them how.. So its there on that end.  At the same time the Pawn shop employee should be educated to know what to do when they receive an apple device and what to check for before purchasing a second hand device.

Still trying to see if there is a solution this time, before he tries to take it back to the pawnshop.

Try to call pawnshop and have him to call the ex-owner of ipad and see if they have the login info in order to reset/wipe.

And have the pawnshop staff to read the websites I gave you.

Yeah just go back to the pawn shop and explain that they sold you an unusable or stolen iPad, and ask them to contact the previous owner to unlock it, or if they can't (which means it's probably stolen) ask for a refund.

yes, education is prime; in this case if the iPad is legit then the owner, the shop and your friend failed to correctly check if the device was in good condition; if the iPad is stolen then it's the shop problem because they are the ones selling stolen goods.

One more thing:

If Pawnshop do not care or not give you any refunds, then that means it is a bad pawnshop...  don't go there again.

perhaps also inform the police to check for handling stolen goods?

You can..

Check and see if BBB records have any complaints on that pawnshop.

If lots of complaints, That pawnshop can be shut down due to the volume of complaints because those people who work there are not doing good job running the pawnshop and/or taking care of customers.

I've never heard of the BBB having the power to shut down any business.

There's a much simpler solution. Direct your friend to the video below

funny enough I found that first thing this morning as well when I did a google search.. He is at work right now, and I didn't know if this still worked, so I wanted to ask here as well.  I am waiting to see if that worked for him

If it is 7.0.4 the exploit still exists and it should work.  I think it was fixed in 7.0.5 but that has only been released in Europe and Asia markets.

I think that folks are recommending accusing the Pawn Shop of dealing with stolen goods if they cannot refund your friend's money, is all.  If they are not willing to help your friend with this issue, then for all he knows the iPad very well could be stolen.

If anything, it would probably be good to educate them on this so that they do not sell any locked iOS devices in the future.

What do you think would be a better approach to this for Apple?  If anyone could call them up and ask them to remove the anti-theft protection what would be the point of the anti-theft protection?  It is not unusual for pawn shops to have stolen goods....
