Graphics card fan broken (Asus R9 280X), Replacement?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Long story short I was an idiot and ****ed a fan on my 280X.  Now I've temporarily sorted it by supergluing the blade back on and it appears to be holding well for the time being.  Obviously I don't consider this a permanent solution.

I wonder if anyone would be able to advise me on sourcing a replacement?  It's the one in this pic on the left.

Asus have been most unhelpful in this matter, I'd have expected a company with their sort of reputation would be able to offer me a replacement part for a charge at the very least?  I've been able to acquire parts from companies in the past without issue!

Anyway, any help much appreciated.

Cheers,

Alex

i think you may find the errr warranty a little void when you send it back and its got super glue all over it, should of sent it back as is and say it fell apart or was like that when ya bought it... pending on how long youve had it for

If you can disassemble the cooler and find that exact fan model somewhere online (T129215SU), you might be able to perform the repair yourself. I'd start by figuring out exactly how you're going to do that before buying the fan, otherwise it might just turn out to be wasted money.

Already tried.  The cooler is super easy to take apart and put back together so no issue.  The model number seems to refer to the motor rather than the fan design itself unfortunately.  Whilst alternatives have been posted and can be found, these are not the same as the original fan. Might have to wait a while until some appear online for sale (my repair job is holding well).  I'm just extremely disappointed Asus won't supply spare parts, it's a terribly anti-consumer policy that I've never come across before.  I remember years ago I bought a Radeon made by "Tyan" and they sent me a relacement fan no issue, and whats more no charge! I'd have expected a company like Asus to have been able to accommodate me!

So this is the second(?) graphics card you've broken the fan on?

I'd send you back for a refund as you seem to be the common factor at fault here. /s

On another note, yes it's nice when companies send out free parts, however they're in the business of making money and free parts don't generate revenue so buy another cooler, a fan from eBay & just replace it.

Would have been nice if Asus could sell him a replacement fan, though.

You're so witty. Anyway, mistakes happen.  The Tyan one went faulty on it's own and they were kind enough to send a replacement without jumping through any hoops.  That point aside, I'm not after a free fan, I'm willing to pay, which is one of the most frustrating factors.  Luckily I've personally been able to fix this myself with whatever solution I see fit, be it using the fan I've repaired, or buying a non-standard fan.  Some people may not be able to however, and effectively what Asus are saying is if you break one simple component such as a fan, you might as well have run over the whole thing with your car.  It's just kind of surprisingly they won't even entertain and out-of-warranty repair with a charge attached to that.  If you smash a wing mirror on your car, you can always buy a new wing mirror.

Exactly.

Exactly.

Did they flat-out say no to buying one?

I'd call up and try a new representative.

Well it's an email exchange.  Initially I inquired about purchasing the new fan and was met with a response which directed me back to the retailer for warranty repair.  Which is fair enough because I didn't give a run down of the circumstances.

I was then met with two replies from Asus following further emails:

Dear [Removed],

Thank you for your email.

Unfortunately ASUS does not sell any spare parts to end users. Spare parts available
are only provided to the repair centre to conduct in warranty repairs.

Unfortunately ASUS UK does not offer a possibility to arrange an out of warranty
repair which carries a charge. ASUS can only accept items for components which are
within the given warranty. When the component has been damaged due to applied
force of any kind the repair cannot be accepted as we do not offer an out of warranty
repair.

I am terribly sorry and it is very unfortunate that we have to advise you that there is
nothing we are able to do regarding this matter. We are unable to provide the spare
parts required to perform the repair yourself.

Kind regards,

Thank you for your reply.

Unfortunately we are unable to make the arrangements to supply spare parts.
Please be advised that it is company policy that we have to uphold and honour. I am not in the position nor have the authorization to make the arrangements. Due to being company policy I can request it however it will be declined as we do not sell any parts to end users.

I am terribly sorry and it is very unfortunate however I am unable to assist you further.

Kind regards,

I'd push further.

In fact, I'd call their bluff. "I was told when I called a week ago that under certain circumstances, it would be possible to be issued with a replacement fan for a fee. I was told that I was able to purchase one at that time. I was unable to pay due to being at work at the time but now I'm available to do it."

In the scheme of things it's a small niggle, I'm lucky I'm still using the card just fine, and could use another fan if I chose at any point.  It's just kind of annoying I can't purchase a new one as I'd have expected from a company with a reputation like Asus.  Perhaps they're all like this these days?

Well I might submit some feedback to somewhere higher in the company regarding this policy (it's worked before).  When I find some time I'll write a long and thorough email :P

I bought this one on eBay for my busted fan blade.  The fan was already going out, I was just dumb enough to stick a paper envelope in it to see if I could isolate the sound... and the edge of the paper was stuff enough to snap the blade.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/85mm-ASUS-ATI-NVIDIA-Video-Card-Cooler-Fan-Replacement-40mm-4Pin-T129025SM-0-18A-/171297318283

Used the part number to search.

Am a bit concerned on the wiring but I think I'll just cut and splice the existing wires by color.  The end connector looks different.

Just to confirm, the card is out of warranty? Doesn't ASUS offer 3 years? I had an issue with an MSI card 2 years ago (1 fan on my 5850 cracked and eventually fell off), but I went through the retailer and in the end received a full refund (card was EOL by then).
