Uncharted PS4 has been in development for 3 years

Posted February 21st, 2014 at 06:01 EDT by Michael Harradence

The president of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios (SCE WWS) has indicated that the next chapter in the Uncharted series - currently in the works for PlayStation 4 - has been in development for three years.

Shuhei Yoshida made the comments during an interview with Inside Games, while discussing PS4?s impressive visual performance.

?After the release of the PS4, the time in which developers are getting accustomed to the hardware is coming. After three years Naughty Dog?s work has finally become exciting, isn?t it??

Yoshida-san clearly doesn?t mention Uncharted by name, though it seems likely he is referring to Nathan Drake?s next adventure. Furthermore, with Uncharted 3 having wrapped in 2011, the timing seems just right, too.

Elsewhere, the executive spoke on how the likes of The Last of Us and Uncharted have managed to realistically convey emotions similar to those in films, minus some subtle differences -- or the ?uncanny valley phenomenon,? as it?s known.

He said Quantic Dream?s The Dark Sorcerer tech demo goes one step further however, making it hard to discern whether it is live action or digital.

Naughty Dog has yet to reveal any concrete details on Uncharted 4, and it is unknown when the game will arrive on shelves.

I do like to hear that a developer has been putting in a lot of time into a project, as long as they weren't having to retool half way through the process for some reason.

Naughty Dog knows how to get the most out of a console, I can't wait to see what they can come up with next.

From a technical and gameplay perspective, I'm sure it'll be great.

But for me, the challenge is making an Uncharted game I actually care about. At the end of U3 I sort of thought, 'yeah, that was good, and I never want to play another one of these again'.

Hopefully there is a console bundle with uncharted, unless a game comes out sooner that I need a ps4 for

I'd be willing to bet there will be a bundle. Uncharted is a flagship title, it would be weird if they didn't create a bundle.

What we know so far:

On November 14, 2013, Naughty Dog released a teaser trailer for the next Uncharted game to come exclusively on the PlayStation 4. The trailer featured voice over by Todd Stashwick, who will play a character in the game.[7] The trailer shows an ancient map of the African continent while the voice over can be heard. The map stops at Madagascar and ?le Sainte-Marie is marked, which was part of Sir Francis Drake's travel route. A Latin sentence is written next to the drawing of a skull: Hodie Mecum Eris In Paradiso (which translates to "Today you will be with me in paradise"), a quote from Luke 23:43.[8]

I'm going to miss the gritty, gory feel of TLoU, but I guess a next-gen Uncharted with decent traversal will be a great experience. Hopefully with the A team back on Uncharted we get an experience like 2 rather than 3. 2 is still the best in the series.

I want to be able to play as a young Sully, perhaps intertwined with Drake in the same game. I just kinda get the feeling that playing as the same character again might get a little stale...not that I don't like the character, far from it, and I'm sure Naughty Dog will pull whatever they're on off brilliantly, but after UC3 I'd like to see Sully's past.

This makes no sense, in the thread for TLoU 2 here wasn't it posted that someone from ND said they hadn't had much time with the new hardware? Someone's telling lies :p

ND is made of two teams IIRC. The team behind TLoU is the lead team, so I'm guessing it's the 2nd team working on U4.

The main team is working on UC4 from what I've read, the 2nd team done UC3. By "in development for 3 years" will probably entail the writing and general theme for UC4. I still suspect it will be a 2015 title with the development team slogging through the technical side of things right now.
