What to look for when buying a projector?

Recommended Posts

We're considering one but don't want to spend over ?500.

What things are important? The lumens?

We'll be watching 1080p movies and playing PC games with it.

(605 euros or $831)

For that price range, I think you can get a pretty mid range decent one.

Also, what things are important to you? Movies? Games? Powerpoint presentations?

Hello,

Either of these are good options for around ?500:

The Optoma clearly says it struggles with fast motion. Why would you recommend a projector that struggles with fast motion when he wants to see HD movies and play games?

The InFocus only gives out 1280x720. If I want to spend money on a project, I would at LEAST expect it to do native 1920 x 1080

We might only pay ?300, that's why I said no more than ?500 and why I was generally asking what to look for when buying a projector :)

At that price range, you are REALLY pushing it. Towards your question, you need more lumens if your room has a lot of light (natural, artificial or just ambient) and if you have a big screen.

Small screen dark room = less lumens

Large screen conference windows room = more lumens

Either way, your budget is pushing it so...

Acer 3D DLP Projektor H6510BD

This is the one I got before Xmas, and it's a great projector, I think it should fall within your price range. It also has the key element thta's important for a projector, very high lumen, 3000 Ansi lumen, so it's usable at day time without shutters, and with shutters it has excellent picture. curently I have a white pulldown screen, but since I'm tired of the v folds, I'll eventually be replacing it with a grey 130 inch ish frame screen. the grey shoudl give richer blacks while giving excellent whites with this projector.

There is another version of this projector, that is slightly cheaper and only has one HDMI port)I believe that's the only difference). it's called somethign with 1500, but I don't remember the full model number, it's usually put in another category cause it's cponsidered a pro/meeting/business projector instead and not a HT projector. but it's the same projector, looks the same, built the same, only with one hdmi instead of two. and most likely you'll be using a receiver as a hdmi switch anyway.

Then you'd be paying more than ?500 for full HD.  There aren't many decent cinema projectors for sub ?500 - so you have to compromise somewhere.

The BENQ W750 HD looks to have solid reviews too so worth considering too.  You may find places stocking it for just over ?400:

Also depending on your room size, you might be needing to restrict yourself to short throw projectors if you want a big picture, but there's calculators for that.

He actually wants lower than 500...

If Im gonna see HD movies, Im not compromising full HD, IMO. It would be a waste of money.

Something I just pulled off a Google search: http://www.ebuyer.com/580501-viewsonic-pjd7820hd-3000-lumens-full-1080p-3d-projector-wolverine-bundle-pjd7820hd-uk

I don't know if it sucks, if its good, reviews, etc. Im just saying that there are out there projectors for 500ish that can give you Full HD. And If you are going to go with a projector for HD Movies, you might as well go Full HD.

I don't trust the reviews... I can get it and see if I like it... if not, I can return it back for refund or exchange as long as they have return policy. If they don't have return policy, I don't buy anything from that store.
