Stephen Elop may not be Microsoft's new CEO, but the former head of Nokia is not going unrewarded for bringing the phone manufacturer into the Microsoft fold. According to an internal memo, Elop will replace Julie Larson-Green as the head of Microsoft's Devices and Studios business, putting him in charge of Xbox, Microsoft Surface, and Microsoft's game development efforts, in addition to the new cellular handset business. The memo reportedly comes from Julie Larson-Green herself as she takes on a new role: she's becoming the Chief Experience Officer for the company's Applications and Services group, managing the look and feel of products like Bing, Office, and Skype.

Name means nothing to me, but I seen this posted with the news - Microsoft CEO candidate Stephen Elop said to consider selling Xbox business, killing Bing

 

Hope MS know what they're doing here (for the Xbox business)  :/

I agree that he does not bring anything to the Xbox division, but I would point out that he is not actually running the Xbox division. Plus, even if he hates the Xbox division and wanted it gone, the new CEO would be the one to make a decision like that, not him.

I know the title of the thread makes it seem like that, but the actual article points out that he is heading up the entire devices and studio division, which includes a lot of stuff, including Xbox.

There are people below him that run seperate divisions. They report to him sure, but they are the ones that make the decisions concerning things like game development and the xbox hardware choices. So if your worried about Xbox, focus on the guys below him, not him directly. The person being replaced, Julie Larson-Green, also had no direct contribution to the Xbox hardware or software development, she just managed the overall division.

They put the guy who wanted to sell off the Xbox division as the boss of the head of the Xbox division. lol

Fun times to come I'm sure.

 

Investors have been telling Microsoft to drop bing and the xbox division for a while now and it hasn't happened so I dont see it happening anytime soon.

Unless the Xbox One flops like the Wii U even if Stephen Elop wanted to sell it off I don't see the Microsoft board agreeing with him.

 

As for bing, it has potential Microsoft just need to work on it.

Could someone post a source for him saying he wants to sell Xbox and Bing?  All I find regarding it is a Bloomberg report that interviews two unnamed people that claim to know how Elop thinks saying that they think he may consider a move like that.

selling xbox or bing would have been a boneheaded move.both are long term investments,and xbox is making money,and bing is about to do the same real soon. if the rumor is true, then he was clearly trying to play to the board,but the board was not impressed. we cant definitely say that was his plan,because, it was a rumor.

 

anyways, he is not the one making decisions,he reports to nadella. i would take him over julie larson green as the head of the hardware division any day.

Just to drive the point home, Elop will be the new executive vice president of the Devices and Services division. He is not heading up the Xbox portion of that division.

In fact, I would say that he will likely be concentrating on the mobile side of things since that is where his focus has been and there is a Nokia group to work on. There is an entire team in place for the Xbox and game development which is not affected by this.

To me, MS selling Xbox is as probable as them selling bing. There never was a direct quote from him and all of that sounds like a made up no-news. Xbox and Xbox Live also exist on Windows and Windows Phone and not just for games. It would be really difficult for them to rip off basic video and music players+stores from Windows and Windows Phone, not to mention the gaming angle of it.

Neither Xbox or Bing are going anywhere, one is a gateway to services and the other is a large part of the backend for those services. People think of Bing as being search but it's much more on a technical level.

 

Besides, Elop never said anything and isn't in charge of anything yet, might be soon though. He's been able to bring more and more content to WP at Nokia though, be it apps or games that have hit the Lumia line first, so I don't see why this is a bad choice for the overall division?

I have tried to understand the Elop hate many times and can't really see any reason beyond "Nokia should have done Android instead". IMO he did the best with what he had. He was brought on board to revive a sinking ship and he lead Nokia from the brink of closure on to a recovery path.

A trojan horse or not, he proved himself in some ways.

It's not. Elop has done splendid at Nokia, and I'd argue, that most (neutral) analysts would agree there.

Elop was the Trojan horse sent to devalue Nokia. He was also a strong advocate of the spinning off the Xbox division and selling it.

 

I'm starting to lose hope that people will learn what a Trojan horse is...
