bing - now I understand the pain/hate

Recommended Posts

I am in Israel for a month and I have been feeling the pain of bing no being up to the par for simple functionality that I take for granted in the US.

well, Microsoft/bing should be embarrassed for having bing behave differently just because I am geographically in a different country even for information that has nothing to do with my location (I am logged in with my US based account).

Consider this example, flight status by searching for flight info (simple search started from IE address bar)

This stumped me because earlier today I remember this search working from my phone (same US based account) so I tried from the phone and sure enough it works

then tried from my Win 8.1 laptop and it worked too!

So what the #### is wrong with bing.com? I guess only Microsoft can screw up like this!

I get the first result when I try from Switzerland. Interestingly, when I head to Google and type in the same search criteria I get the result that you're looking for. I didn't know Google would do that.

I have a server in IL that i have access to, just ran the same test and it worked fine for me.

Huh! That's weird then, I have no idea why it doesn't work for me.

Yeah - these searches are really useful and I use it all the time. Package/flight tracking, simple calculations, currency conversion etc.

click gear/settings icon,

choose "Worldwide" and choose "United States" for better search result.

US is the better "world" according to MSFT.

wow - that worked but still the why remains. :/

I should be able to track flights irrespective of my region. :s

Edit: They don't have an option for Israel in those settings, which is funny because I am in a building about a block away from Microsoft's ILDC

Yeah, I don't know why the bing.com web site doesn't just show the same things for every country yet, the backend is the same, the data sources are the same, makes no sense to hold it back.

I'm on holiday in Australia and it works here too. In fact, I've been pleasantly surprised by how good the local search results have been here. Local Scout on my Lumia has been working really well.

Bing needs a lot of work. Not as good with user name and phone number search. Google does a better job.
