PlayStation 4 moves just shy of 350K units in first two days at Japanese retail

Recommended Posts

Some of us were wondering how many PS4s would move in Japan in the first 24-48 hours, well now we know:

By Japanese game console launch standards, the PlayStation 4 is off to a great start. In the first 48 hours of availability, Japanese console buyers snapped up just under 350,000 PlayStation 4 systems (322,083 to be exact, according to Famitsu). That's roughly four times what the PlayStation 3 moved at launch back in 2006 and about six times what Xbox 360 sold in 2005 -- not too shabby!

That's just a drop in the bucket for PS4's worldwide sales thus far, which crested 5 million last week (well ahead of Sony's sales estimate for its current financial quarter). It also inches the PS4 ever closer to 6 million units sold worldwide, putting it well over the competition's (admittedly not recently updated) numbers.

You might be wondering, "Why does this matter to me?" It might not! But it certainly doesn't hurt your chance of playing more great games if the console makers are doing well and facing stiff competition. It's like the opposite of the slogan for Aliens vs. Predator: Whoever loses, we win!

Fair play to them.

I think that it is a very important lesson for the industry in general that not only is console gaming not dying but is the healthiest it has ever been.

Games like Kingdom Come Deliverance were refused funding on the basis next gen consoles were considered DOA by major publishers. How wrong they were. It is sad to think how many awesome games we will not see now because of the industry's short sightedness.

It goes to show if someone can get the product right, people will pay for it.

I think it needs to be a little closer to 350k than that to be able to really say it's "just shy" of 350k.

Also, it's interesting to see how the japanese aren't as willing to buy into a less than great launch lineup like the other regions are.

These are certainly good numbers for Japan and Sony.

Anyone expecting huge numbers just isn't aware of the reality of the market in Japan.

I just want to see enough demand to make sure that we still see strong Japanese developer support.

software sales look pretty weak. just for reference, Wii U sold 308K in its launch weekend.

Nintendo usually does well in Japan, but like everywhere else the Wii U ended up being a flop after initial sales.

The PS4 actually sold 4x as much as the PS3's launch and the PS3 ended up doing pretty well in Japan.

With over 500,000 PS4 game sales (including the bundled Knack) that's not too bad, plus it doesn't count how many digital games were bought.

Now you mention it the Wii U overtook 360 lifetime sales in Japan this week. Might as well mention it here since the Nintendo section is dead when it comes to news :P

I know people like to pick on MS and their performance in Japan, but I was very happy to see them try again with the 360. That early lineup of rpgs was really good.

I hope MS makes another attempt with the X1, but then I also get that its very expensive to try without much hope of a long term pay off. Still, the 360 outdid the first xbox, so maybe that kind of growth is enough to motivate MS to try again.

If not, well then I'm glad I have a ps4. Although its not like the jrpg market is very healthy at the moment outside of handhelds and mobile.

I don't know if this is true, but I've read that the Japanese are sort of Nationalistic even when it comes to consumer products. They prefer Japanese stuff over Western brands. (Prefer Playstations over Xboxs, for example)

This might be false internet rumor stuff, and I am not trying to slight an entire country of people, but it does seem to be a pretty common perception of the Japanese market to Western businesses trying to sell their wares there.

Haha seriously? Got to love MS for even trying out there now.

Solid numbers for the PS4 though. Hopefully Sony get back on-form regarding their financials.

PS4 is about 6 mil globally by the end of Feb 2014. Xbox is about 3.5 mil globally by the end of Feb 2014.

At this rate PS4 will be 2:1 globally sometime this year. I don't think Titanfall or Tier 2 launches will do much to change that.

2:1 globally was pretty easy to predict looking at the pre-launch metrics.

true, easy win.

They are, even with Japanese brands.  Sony actually lost a lot of customer faith when they began manufacturing outside of Japan in Korea and China.
