New Developers Sign On to ID@Xbox

Recommended Posts

It has been an exciting couple months for ID@Xbox. We created this program to make it easy for independent developers to bring their innovative ideas to Xbox One, and the response from the community continues to be amazing!

In December, we gave you a first look at developers worldwide who joined the program. Without further ado, below are some more ID@Xbox developers hard at work on their games. Remember, this list is by no mean exhaustive ? more than 200 developers are already creating games using dev kits provided by ID@Xbox right now ? it?s just a sample of the many independent developers who will be bringing their games to Xbox One.

Honestly when I look at this list, all I can say is ?wow.? It?s incredibly humbling to see so many fantastic studios there supporting Xbox One, from XBLIG and XBLA alumni like Ska Studios and Humble Hearts, to new studios like Glass Bottom Games and Heart Machine, and veterans including Robomodo, Zo? Mode and Playdead. We could not be more excited!

ID@Xbox is a global program and we?re committed to bringing the best from around the world to Xbox One. The first ID@Xbox games are in certification now and, as always, we continue to look for ways to improve the creation process for our ID@Xbox partners with new processes and tools. Stay tuned for updates on both soon!

Never heard of any of these studios, can you list some popular games they have made?

They are indie developers, so its no surprise you wouldnt be as familiar.

Reading down the list, The Behemoth are big to me becuase they made castle crashers.

I think most of those listed have made games before.

The Behemoth was the dev I actually knew and really liked, had to look up the others and it turns out they have some studios who have made some pretty big games.

The Behemoth - Castle Crashers, Alien Hominid HD, and Battleblock Theater.

Rebellion - Sniper Elite series

Playdead - Limbo

Compulsion Games - Contrast

Larian Studios - Divinity series

Warhorse Studios - Currently making Kingdom Come: Deliverance

There's always one.

To ruffle some feathers, I find it quite amusing how pre-launch of these consoles everyone regarded the X1 the indie hating platform. With news like this, its quite apparent that the place for the indie driven titles between the consoles is the X1. The common codebases between platforms will help astronomically with this.

Not everyone follows the indie scene that closely. I play indie games more than anything and I often forget studio/game relations.

I wouldn't say either of them have pushed ahead in the area though. PS4 has made an early lead actually releasing indies with more being announced every day. And ever since ID was announced there has been another breathe of life into X1 development. Once the games actually start releasing I'd say they're pretty even footed.

I don't follow indie gaming much, but why are people trying to link the developers to games? Indie isn't about monopolising well known series'. Its about bringing younger creative talent into the scene to allow more ideas to flow into the gaming industry.

You honestly don't feel like this puts the X1 on top? I don't want to turn it into a console bashing thread but with both ID@Xbox lists which have been announced recently, it puts the Xbox leap and bounds infront based on developer count alone. Sony have stayed pretty much quiet about anything since launch.

The only reason I'm saying this though is because of the indie-hate bashing it received prior to the ID@Xbox program, the announcement of it and that '180' which is clearly false.

Not really. I'm sure if someone compiled a complete list they'd be pretty even. The vita is also offering incentive for some to port their games to a platform which isn't see much competition from AAA.

Quick google and found these 2 substancial lists:

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/187080/

http://uk.ign.com/wikis/playstation-4/PlayStation_4_Indie_Games

And I see no issue about indies creating series instead of one off games. Why is it ok for Ska Studio to make 2 Vampire titles or Ed McMillian to create 2 Issacs but the rest are limited to 1? Hell, Team 17 do nothing but Worms pretty much since they were founded and they've opened their doors to publish other games instead of making new IP themselves.

But you're right, this topic will not be PS4 vs X1 so let's nip it in the bud now.

This is just a continuation of the untouched Indie support that was found in the Xbox 360, which has 4000 Indie games. This will just build on top of that strong Indie library.

To be pedantic, the announcement above states that the list isn't even the full list and there's over 200. The links you've listed have quite a lot of cross over between the platforms.

To me more civilised, I'm really happy the consoles have self-publishing platforms with such open arms.

Well to be really pedantic, if you care about indies, you play them on PC. Their true home (Y) :P

Indie is a shortform of "independence" or "independent";

Its not about bringing younger creative talent into the scene because large studios and developers can do that, its about giving a developer full independent control over their game and they can follow their vision of the game rather than their publisher telling them what to do to make it sell well.

Indie studios have made many games that have been hugely popular, I don't follow the indie scene but was just curious if the studios listed made anything which would be noticeable.

if you dont follow the indie scene then chances are that you wouldnt recognize most, if not all, of the titles created by these developers.

As Andy mentioned above, the pc is the clear leader when it comes to this for obvious reasons. Consoles are just now starting to catch up thanks to friendlier policies and console hardware/software taht makes supporting each platform much easier/cheaper.

I really hope some of these Indies take advantage of Kinect, and the cloud compute....

But that is wishful thinking...

Kinect? A strong chance. Cloud Processing? I doubt it.
