neocyber_16
Hi, I have an "old" computer I've been using for almost four years now and unfortunately, the computer started crashing all of a sudden last night. When I press the power button, the computer will shutdown anywhere from 5-20 seconds after bootup. It's been very random. I can't enter desktop mode because the computer crashing. Here are my specs AMD PHenom II 955 8GB RAM Crossfired 2x7770 MSI 790XT OCZ 1000W power supply Kingston 128GB SSD 250GB Drive 128GB Drive (taken from laptop) 100GB Drive (taken from laptop) I can enter bios but by the time I try to fiddle with the settings the computer crashes. I'm starting to think its the power supply, any other ideas please? Thanks.
snaphat (Myles Landwehr) Member Posted February 27, 2014 Member Share Posted February 27, 2014 Some clarifying questions: Is it BSODing? Does it make it to the OS? Does it also crash in BIOS configuration? Does it crash with another OS?
neoraptor
Possibly overheating, if you have pin reset the bios to defaults, clean up the dust, reseat ram - those are the simplest things to do.

Overheat a few seconds in? Sounds unlikely to me. I'm guessing a HDD or a motherboard problem. So try to boot your HDD on another PC and see if it boots. Try booting without RAM and if you don't hear any beeps from your PC, it could be a motherboard problem. About the PSU - do you notice anything unusual about it? spikey_richie
Try powering up the PSU with no load and not connected to the motherboard. Do this by following this guide: http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-power-up-an-ATX-Power-Supply-without-a-PC/ See if the PSU will stay powered up, if whether it switches itself off. +Warwagon MVC Posted February 27, 2014 MVC Share Posted February 27, 2014 I wouldn't call the computer shutting off a crash. I would check the heatsink and make sure it's not full of dust. Also check the thermal paste on the CPU and try a different power supply.
Krome
2 most likely reasons are caused by: 1) CPU overheat and shut itself down. I think AMD called it COP? 2) PSU has burned out caps. Put it in simple English, you need a new PSU. That's the only two most critical thing that would cause your computer to shutdown or restart at those certain intervals. Bi4me
Why would hdd matter in bios ? Also yes cpu can overheat it is less than a second. He said it crashes in BIOS as well as in OS. I've had this problem with a badly damaged HDD. CPU can overheat this fast if it's it's body or isolation is broken.
