Ideal Tablet for 6 kid old boy

Recommended Posts

I am on the hunt for an Ideal Tablet for 6 kid old boy.

It needed to be ideal for learning, and likely would need a 3G or 4G data plan.  I need to be able to communicate with the tablet from my Windows XP desktop.

Does the Apple APP store have a ton of free downloads along these requirements?

And what about Android ?

Microsoft Tablets are so expansive, I will not even consider it.

What if I can locate a Blackberry Playbook ?

Yes the Apple app store has free learning apps, and quite a few last time I looked.

Also what do you mean by Windows tablets being to 'expansive'? Expensive, perhaps, if you want one with 3G/4G (can't think of any off the top of my head), but they are actually quite cheap. Surface RT is very cheap these days and the 8" tablets are much cheaper than iPads, though more expensive than Android tablets.

But why do you need a data plan anyway, especially if you're giving this to a kid and you plan to have educational apps installed? Surely Wifi is enough.

And LOL at Blackberry Playbook...

If you are looking for a good tablet that is not to expensive and have all the features a tablet should have I would recommend a Nexus 7 and you could probably find one for $250 and often cheaper. You can easily set up profiles for you and your kid so you can limit what he can do on it and yet you will still be able to use everything if you choose. As for applications you should be able to find most of the applications that you can get on Apples App Store on Google Play (The android equivalent of the App Store on iOS).

Here is the listing on Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/devices/details/Nexus_7_16GB_Black_Wi_Fi_only?id=nexus_7_16gb_2013

I highly recommend the Nabi 2. (https://www.nabitablet.com/) It's a tabled actually designed for kids. Gave it to my daughter when it first came out over a year and a half ago, and well, she's using it right now (spring break).

It's built well. Has a bumper to save it from drops. It locks the kids out of the advanced settings and gives them a friendly interface. One of the best features is the time controls, which lets you set a limit on games, while rewarding educational use. Has a chores app, learning apps and works with Google Play, Amazon's app store and the Nabi AppZone.

Seriously, this is a no-brainer, this tablet is awesome for kids. Get the newer Nick or Disney version if your kid is into that. $179 for the standard, $199 for the newer Nick or Disney.

If you absolutely need 3G/4G, then an iPad is probably your best bet.  Having the 3G/4G option isn't cheap though.

If you just need Wifi, I'd highly recommend the Nexus 7.  For ~$200, it's arguably the best value on the market.

I think a Kindle Fire is best for a 6 year old.

I have a playbook.. it is quite limited.. definitely more of an adult tablet (email, web browsing, etc).   Both my girls have cheap 99$ android (4.1.0) tablets that run all the games they want.  Throw a nice solid case on it and you should be good to go.

<Old man rant> Tablet? When I was a kid, tablets were called Etch-a-sketches! Two colors! No new-fangled touchscreens - you used knobs! You shook it to reboot it! And we liked it! </OMR>

But seriously, the Nabi looks like a good choice.
