33 Dead, 130 Injured in China Knife-Wielding Spree

A group of knife-wielding men attacked a train station in southwestern China on Saturday, killing at least 29 people and injuring more than 130 others in what Chinese officials called a terrorist strike, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

Four of the attackers were also shot dead and only one was captured alive after the mayhem, which broke out about 9 p.m. (8 a.m. ET) at the Kunming Railway Station in the capital of southwest China's Yunnan Province.

The Kunming government said the "serious violent terrorist attack was planned and organized by Xinjiang separatist forces," Xinhua reported.

Ethnic Turkish Uighur separatists have been sporadically fighting for an independent state in Xinjiang, in northwestern China, home to about 10 million Uighur, who are predominantly Muslim. More than 100 people have been killed in protests in Xinjiang in the past year.

Yang Haifei, a resident of Yunnan, told Xinhua that he was attacked and sustained injuries on his chest and back.

Yang said he was buying a ticket when he saw a group rush into the station, most of them dressed in black, and started stabbing people.

"I saw a person come straight at me with a long knife, and I ran away with everyone," he said, adding that people who were slower were severely injured.

"They just fell on the ground," he added.

Yunnan province Vice Gov. Gao Feng held an emergency meeting at No. 1 People's Hospital, where the injured are being rushed, and said hospitals have received 162 people.

State-run Yunnan News said that the men were wearing uniforms when they stormed the railway station and that gunshots were heard after police arrived.

It's a problem in this day and age when anyone can just walk into a store and purchase a knife with no background check or even a requirement to register their knife.

If you want a knife you need to have insurance and you should have a license because you know you have to have a license to drive a car so why not take a test and and get a license in order to buy a knife?

When this starts happening every year, feel free to come back with that.  Until then, knives and guns aren't in the same category and pretending like we shouldn't be restricting guns because something like this happens is nonsense.

Well it really depends on if it's an "assault style" knife. But yes, you should have to have a knife license.

On the contrary, they are one in the same. These attacks correspond to an underlying issue or issues.

People shouldn't be able to buy these kinds of knifes or guns for that matter.

Yeah totally because you know the people in Ukraine are getting shot up and don't have anything to defend themselves with.

Last time I checked those demonstrators had no trouble acquiring weapons of all sorts.

I read the original post and contemplated writing a post about how this should be moved straight to Gun Debate but refrained

Guess it only took until post 2 before we were back at the guns

Hey now, I said nothing about guns. That would be off topic because the article has nothing to do with guns. But really, knives can be dangerous, especially assault style knives and swords. Why shouldn't they be registered?

Most of the pictures I see people aren't really heavily armed, a hand gun here or there but mostly Molotov cocktail's. Nothing like you would see in a armed population.

How many people drive illegally though? Whatever laws and regulations are put in place is irrelevant, they will be bypassed its just the way of the world.

Sad to see though, RIP
