IS MS China Extending Windows XP Support In China?

Recommended Posts

As we know, MS will terminate XP support on Apr 8, and Neowin News had a few reports about "transfer tool" and "MS nagging XP users".

2 days ago, MS China made a post in Weibo(Chinese micro-blog) about using XP after Apr 8, and many Chinese sites quoted the post and claims that "MS China will specially extend XP support for Chinese users".

However, yesterday, Larry Seltzer in a ZDNet blog, reported that MS has denied such extension:

So, here's the original MS China post, you could decide for yourselves, notice that the translated part (point no. 2) in italic is taken from Seltzer's blog, as it was well translated.

Translation:

Thanks for everybodies' concern about XP retirement, subject to the queries, we further explain the 4 points:

Firstly, Computers installed with XP can still be used after Apr. 8

2. Microsoft China has taken special actions to closely work with leading Chinese internet security and anti-virus companies including Tencent for them to provide security protection for Chinese Windows XP users before they upgrade to modern operating system.

3. Record shows that in the past 13 years, 70% of XP users in China did not choose to deploy the security support supplied by MS on a regular basis, Therefore for most users, the XP retirement only has a small effect, despite this, MS and Chinese vendors will still provide security protection with the coming safety provision releases for these users, until they choose to upgrade to a modern OS.

4. This 13 year old product(XP) is not adequate to satisfy the modern web operation requirements, unable to respond to the ever-evolving web safety threats, the modern OS can provide much greater safety protection in a web environment.

Thank you all for the love and support of XP, but it is inevitable to say goodbye, until you choose to migrate to a modern OS, we join hands with vendors to protect your safety, you won't be abandoned.

#3 is the most relevant. Most of the XP in China are pirated and have Windows Update turned off as a result. So it doesn't matter if support ends or not.
