'Project Spark' arrives on Xbox One

Lets you create games across PCs and consoles

Microsoft is launching a beta version of Project Spark for its Xbox One console today. The game-maker project originally launched in test form on Windows 8.1 in December, and the expansion to the Xbox One today allows allow developers, enthusiasts, and gamers to build a game within a game that runs across PCs, tablets, and Xbox consoles. Players can build custom worlds, characters, and animations from the Xbox One, and continue editing or playing them on a Windows 8.1 PC. It's similar in concept to Sony's LittleBigPlanet, but Microsoft continues to make use of its Kodu platform efforts, while pushing SmartGlass integration to allow players to interact with games from a tablet while they build and play on an Xbox One.

Like the Windows 8.1 version, Project Spark for Xbox One allows gamers to create different characters, worlds, and missions. The Xbox One version of Project Spark adds the ability for gamers to capture animations, audio, and custom moves using Kinect, but any Project Spark games can be shared with others, and edited further. Project Sparkautomatically converts controls from mouse and keyboard to the Xbox One controller, and vice versa. The platform is fairly flexible, allowing gamers to create third-person shooters, 2D platforms, tower-defense games, and action games similar to Zelda or Fable. Each element in a game is fully customizable, with a "brain" interface that controls movement of actions of objects.

You will need a key in order to play the game. If you register, then you will get a key within a day.

I'm really hoping the possibilities are as extensive as they say, it looks like anything is possible here, can't wait!

Playing it right now....it's overwhelming. I mean, it's insane how much stuff is here. Down to the minutest of things, like how long for "Game Over" to fade away, and which font to use.

This is just crazy. Some of the maps out there and games made...I have to wonder how the heck they did it.

I have been playing around with the Win 8 versions and it is most definitely an in depth framework for building games.

I think the big thing they will need to keep improving is expanding the tools that will allow for a wider range of genres and content. As it is now, its still as focused or as wide ranging as you want it to be depending on the time you want to put into making a game.

I'll be getting the X1 version for sure.

I was going through some of the community games, and I noticed that some of them have keyboard commands on the screen UI/HUD. I know it's cross compatible with PC, but the game was pretty much useless without the button mapping on the screen.

Out of curiosity, if you plug a keyboard into the X1, does it work with a game like that?

Keyboard works with X1 but I have not tried with Spark...  I have not thought about using the keyboard on the games...  I still have not gotten a key from Spark Team yet so I can't play until I get the key.

I used the keyboard for web surfing..

Went to bed at 1am woke at 8 for work and wife had been up all night on it and her game is looking a lot better than mine lol.  Its so much fun. Menus and stuff have gotten pretty laggy sometimes but bareable

Kinect on Xbox One ?really mind staggering?

The potential of Kinect on Xbox One is ?mind staggering? according to Project Spark creative director Henry Sterchi, whose game creation title is now in beta on the console. Speaking exclusively to X-ONE, Sterchi singled out the motion capture potential of the tech as something to look out for.

?The possibilities with Performance Capture using Kinect on Xbox One is really mind staggering. Providing gamers with what is essentially a mo-cap studio in the comfort of their living room opens up some incredible possibilities. Players can create games with VO performed by their friends and family. They could act out scenes from their favourite movies, putting them together into a montage. Whether this leads to digital games of charades, or improv comedy sessions, or something none of us have even thought about yet, is very, very exciting. We can?t wait to see what people create.?

Edit:  I fiddled w/this on PC and the Xbox One.  I am not good at content creation, but I can't wait to see what others can think of.  Just think a game where you can play a ton of other games.  All without leaving this one game...

Someone needs to make an Inception game on Project Spark.  It will include games within games within a game.

I'm waiting on one but they seem to be very slow, so if I could have one that'd be great
