Nvidia 740M Driver Install Issue - ASUS X750JB

Recommended Posts

I have an Asus X750JB notebook. I did a clean install of Windows 7 on it, got all the drivers re-established except for the graphics. For the life of me I cannot get Windows to cross over to the 740M driver.

Whether I let Windows Update install the thing, or if I download it directly from Nvidia - it will install the device but consistently use the "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter" every time. After the driver installs Windows will even say it was successful, and reboot to put into use. But when I reboot it simply reverts to the VGA adapter, even though the 740M is now listed in the device manager.

Any ideas? I've done this with desktops a zillion times, but not too keen on notebooks so I'm hoping there's a missing link...

It's supposed to default to the low-power integrated GPU. If you install a game, you can right-click the shortcut and run it with the "high performance NVIDIA processor". I don't know how you can make it run with the NVIDIA GPU all the time. I imagine you'd have to change your power settings to high performance.

Is Windows doing that? Is a piece of Asus software doing that? Or is that some type of BIOS setting?

I don't know. I imagine it would be a BIOS setting but it could be a driver setting too. After all, it's a laptop so it makes sense for it to default to a GPU that uses less power.

Per the ASUS support page, the only graphics driver necessary seems to be the Nvidia. There is also no apparent setting in the BIOS.

Though it does make sense for the GPU to switch, (obviously) Aero is off and the graphics processing & image drawing is extremely poor on the standard VGA adapter. This should not be the case...

Update: When I go to the Nvidia Control Panel, it says: "NVIDIA Display settings are not available. You are not currently using a display attached to an NVIDIA GPU." So...I guess maybe it doesn't see the GPU at all?

Hi Dark,

quite strange problem, have you run a diagnostic program?

Another thing, try to disinstall old drivers before install new ones, and if you have issues,

try to use softwares like drivermax, driver genius pro, driver easy etc, they will find right driver for your hardware and are

quite effective.

i'd uninstall all the graphics drivers - both Intel and nvidia. check the BIOS again for any setting relating to the 740M.

after a reboot, let Windows install the default drivers. forget the Intel drivers for now; download and install the nvidia drivers (manually, from their site). dont let WU or nvidia do any auto-install nonsense. should be either 337.50s or 335.23

You'll need to install the Intel Display drivers (I would recommend using the latest available from Intel's download page). After a reboot, install the latest nvidia drivers applicable to the 740M.

If you are using a stock driver or even the inbuilt WDDM Intel display variants then Optimus will not work correctly, reliably or in your case; at all.

GPU preferences for which device to use are configurable within the Nvidia Control Center.

EDIT: I would ensure that no Intel or Nvidia video driver is installed before you begin installing the Intel drivers.
