SpaceX Raptor: engines for super-rockets (thread 2)

Recommended Posts

Yeah, that's a super-sized blowtorch they're firing there. Imagine a full thrust plume with 20-40 engines! Those launches are gonna be awesome, and LOUD :woot:

The new cell may be for larger, methane fuelled and electrically fired RCS and cradle landing positioning  thrusters akin to Draco and SuperDraco for ITS/ITSy.  They need those too.

I suspect also that 39-A might not withstand ITS if it's cranking out the full Monty. ITS Junior, sure. It was designed for up to 20 million lbf. Might need retrofitting after all this time (it's been going on 50 years). If the numbers I'm coming up with are right, 39-A won't survive the Mothership without a full refit.

And yes, it's gonna be pushing far in excess of 20 million lbf with it's current design. We'll have to see what Elon's presentation next month has as far as changes to the design are concerned. Maybe they won't be going with 42 Raptors now (which won't surprise me).
