Which is the best download manager?

Recommended Posts

Hello!

It's really bugging me lately but I would like to find a good download manager.

I have tried Flashget (http://www.flashget.com/) but it has not been updated for ages.

Maybe it doesn't need to, maybe they have discontinued it, maybe who knows?

And its Font GUI makes me tired just to set the settings.

Then I have moved to Internet Download Manager  (http://www.internetdownloadmanager.com/)

It's really good, it gets the job done whatever you throw at, it also has nice features:

syncing, lists (queues), resume support but it is not free and it needs a yearly subscription.

I have also tried JDownloader.

It is a good download manager supporting lots of host sites but it uses Java and I would like to avoid Java based programs

because they are heavy and use lots of resources.

Another good one is DownThemAll! Firefox Extension but I do not use Firefox.

So I would like some recommendations for Windows 8.1

Thanks a lot.

Either http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/ or http://ugetdm.com/.

FDM is a very full featured program, with batch downloads, and a download scheduler. FDM also searches for mirrors of your download, to accelerate it more.

uGet is a lightweight choice and is a lot more simple than FDM.

I think uGet is better (out of the box) because FDM's UI is intrusive by default (transparent windows showing downloads in the bottom right corner). If you take the time to customize FDM, it is great, and you get a true speed boost.

I've used IDM for a couple of years now, as you said it's premium but I don't grudge paying ?15 or so a year for all of the features it adds, although if anyone has any good free alternatives then I'd be up for giving them a go! I mainly use it to put all of my downloads in a queue, for example if I'm going out and leave my computer downloading a TV series then I'd rather leave the episodes downloading in order so that I don't come back to a bunch of 50% completed files with hours left to go each. Also being able to grab videos/media off of pretty much any website is nice (although there are plenty of extensions which do the same job for free).

That's a pretty big downside....

haven't found another download manager with an equal or better feature set so i put up with java for it. i play minecraft so i have java installed anyway (though have it disabled for browsers)

Either the already-mentioned Free Download Manager, or EagleGet, my download manager of choice, are good free alternatives. :)

have not heard of this one. might have to check out eagleget myself later

Just make sure you've disabled applets in your browser and you're pretty much fine. After that it's really no worse than anything else out there.

Getright Pro. The first download manager ever made is still the best with built in web server, client server mode, proxy, scripting and more also no java :)

Everything but the kitchen sink.

I am using Westbyte's IDA (Internet Download Accelerator) paid version since 10 years. Don't plan to switch to anything else.

Is it still being developed? I haven't used GetRight since Windows 9x/2k.

Also another alternative: Orbit Downloader

Been using Internet Download Manager for years now and have yet to find anything I like better. It's simple to use, really does make your downloads for big files much faster and also has very nice tech support.

It's not necessarily feature over loaded like maybe some of the other download managers out there but it does all the most important stuff that most users who download lots of big files would need and I think that is a good thing so it does not feel bloated at all. Also updates are released pretty often although most of the updates released in the last 2 years or so have for the most part been what I would call minor updates. I am hoping a major update will be coming sometime soon with some new features that I have been wanting. Bet yep you can not go wrong with IDM and is well worth the price.

I was using Flashget, now FDM, but most downloads go at full speed for my line (1.5-2MB/s) so I don't even bother starting them any longer. Plus downloading through the browser triggers the W8 smartscreen scan, downloading with most download manager doesn't.

Never have seen the point in any download manager myself unless you have a totally crappy connection or something.

I have used flashget before, just to see what these things were about. Did nothing for me. Didn't know there were as many as mentioned here of these type programs though.
