Yeah, it depends on your internet connection so it could be a couple hours BUT the wait is absoluely worth it.

Windows Update being what it is you can expect the whole process to take an entire night ...

Does't really matter. Every .NET updates takes around 5 minutes to install and if his computer is a french windows 8 install he'll probably need to install like 20 .NET security update before he can install 8.1 and then he'll have to install another 20 .NET security update again ...

In this case it will, as you download Windows 8.1 from the Windows Store, not Windows Update.

Yeah but it's not 8.1 that will take time it's what you need to install before and after ;)

But i'm just sarcastic here probably cause i installed windows 7 last week for a friend and it took like 5 hours to update it lol the download were fast, the install not so much specially ******* .NET.

[edit]

/sarcasm

But to help the op updating to windows 8.1 is not really easy and clear. To update to 8.1 you need to do it from the Windows Store. BUt to see the update Windows 8 needs to be updated. If you don't see 8.1 update from the windows store run windows update until you see windows 8.1 from the store then you can install 8.1 from it.

Yes, it's recommended that you install the latest drivers after updating to Windows 8.1, regardless if you already have them or not.
