Okay so I want a bigger TV. Which one of these?

Recommended Posts

I saw a crazy deal at Walmart and if I didn't leave for vacation that night, I would have bought it. Everywhere else it's on sale for about $1000 but in Walmart it is $598. I want to know if I should buy this TV or another.

This LG Plasma is the one on sale.

But I want to buy this Vizio M series 55 inch.

Which would be a better buy? Thanks!

Plasma are not a go with me... LCD based TV's last more longer. I have an old Vizio and has been rock solid for years. I will say based in my experience with the Vizio brand... I will recommend you the Vizio M.

I like that LG Plasma but I have no experience with the model so can't recommend either. I had a plasma for years but then got a LG LCD now which has been flawless for the years I've had it. My next TV will be in that 60" range too but not sure if i'm doing plasma or LCD either.

Yeah, I'd go for the Vizio too, I'd always pick a LCD/LED TV over a plasma plus IMO it's a better brand, smart TV plus it's 3D capable. $400 more but I'd say it's definitely worth it!

Plasmas use more electricity but hands-down have better picture quality.

I'm not sure about the energy consumption part, but I notice a better picture quality on plasma screens. That said, I would never get one myself. With that in mind, I would go for the LCD screen instead.

As a owner of all 3 types (LCD, LED, Plasma) and them being higher end at one point I can safely say the plasma holds the best picture.  That being said plasma tvs require a more light controller environment (you being in sunny FL wont help).  So if you are placing this tv in a open lit area with alot of windows.. I'd say go for the LCD, but if this is for a basement type setting or room where you can block the light.. go for the plasma (I also am not a fan of the Vizio brand).

I used to own a plasma (Philips 42PF7320A/37A) - while I had no real issues with it over its life, when it finally croaked, it was replaced with a smaller but better-fit Sony BRAVIA LED (40BX450).

The plasma's pluses were digital-cable-ready/CableCARD support (rendered moot by my purchasing a Tivo Premiere during a sales event on Amazon two years back) and a quality picture for the price (the Sony has a better picture due to improvements in PQ of most LED HDTVs - which didn't exist when I bought the Philips).

LED - not plasma - is generally the go-to display type for flat-panels for any use today, and especially multiple-type use (single display for TV, movies, consoles, or even PC/HTPC usage).

Regardless of display type, there is one must: multiple HDMI inputs (HDMI is THE preferred input for ideal display quality for any TV, and quite aside from copy-protection - make sure you have enough inputs for your devices) is the largest, especially for a home theater.  Our home theater is designed around a SAMSUNG SMART LED 55" (the second Samsung SMART TV, and third Samsung LED HDTV overall in the house) - the HDMI inputs are used by a Comcast HD STB and Panasonic HD BD player, while audio is dealt with by a BOSE CineMate-1SR surround speaker system (which also provides the universal remote).

While the CineMate-1SR is primarily aimed at movie and sports fans, the CineMate-1SR does surprisingly well as a music speaker system - one thing ttha the Panny BD player is used the MOST for is CD playback, and that is entirely due to the CineMate-1SR.  (The CineMate does equaly well with MusicChoice, and the universal remote is quite solid without, being overly fancy - it replaced the STB, BD player, and TV remotes, from three different companies, and without losing any fanctionality, which is seldom the case with universal remotes.)  The CineMate is called "invisible surround" for a reason - the only visible part is generally the soundbar.  The two satellite speakers are small and unobtrusive, while the subwoofer is designed TO disappear - it's hidden in a corner, under a coffee table.

While I don't consider LG a premium quality brand (neither is samsung they're pretty much the same middle+ class), You seriously consider Vizio a BETTER brand ?

Go with the Plasma, it'll give better picture(unless it's a real cheap one) and smart TV features are crap anyway, especially on cheaper brand. The interfaces are slow and clucnky and the CPU's in them are to slow makign everythign a terrible experience.

and no a Plasma does NOT have a shorter life than an LCD. not sure where macoman got that idea.

Depends, new Plasma's are very bright(especially if they're 3D ready/certified), and new LCD's come with glossy plastic screens, meaning they have the same reflection issues as Plasma, except Plasma TV's have anti reflection coating that you don't get on the cheap and wavy glossy plastic screens. the higher end you go on plasma the better coating they generally use(sometimes it's the only difference between a cheap and expensive model except maybe a faster proecessor and more user configurable PQ options, and dumping in a useless smart tv feature)

Well my brother and sister in law have had nothing but trouble with LG TV's and same with one of my friends. A year ago I bought 2 Vizio TV's to replace the Vizio in my bedroom and Sony in my living room and so far I've had no problems at all with the 3 of them, good quality for the price, which is cheaper than they paid for their LG TV's which were similar, so from personal experience, yes I'd say they are a better brand. Would the majority agree? No, but I wouldn't recommend something which has been inferior in my case. Also I agree, everyone that I know now owns a Samsung TV and I have no idea why.

Yea.. my panny plasma has a glass surface so it doesnt do great with reflections.. brightness is not an issue for me. (vt50 model)

  • 3 months later...

I'd say go with plasma but that particular model of LG will not have deep colour saturation, won't be as good for gaming and will be more reflective than a higher end plasma. To the people doubting Vizio, they've really stepped up their game. I *highly* recommend this Vizio: http://www.amazon.com/VIZIO-E550i-B2-55-Inch-1080p-Smart/dp/B00GKKI4JI/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1403375895&sr=8-4&keywords=vizio+2014+e-series They also have it in a 60 inch model here http://www.amazon.com/VIZIO-E600i-B3-60-Inch-1080p-Smart/dp/B00GTE0VJ6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1403375983&sr=8-1&keywords=vizio+2014+e-series

It doesn't have 3D capabilities but some great PQ, especially for that price range.

If you want some opinions on that set, check these impressions out CNETs review: http://www.cnet.com/products/vizio-m652i-b2/

Of course, the one you listed up above is a good choice as well, especially if you want 3D.
