Sony's PlayStation 4 going up $50 (Canada)

Source: http://www.torontosun.com/2014/03/14/sonys-playstation-4-going-up-50

Sony Computer Entertainment Canada confirmed Friday that the price of the PS4 in Canada will rise $50, from $399.99 to $449.99, effective Saturday. The price of the DualShock 4 controller and PlayStation Camera will each rise $5 to $64.99.

In a statement, Sony said the price increases in Canada are ?to respond to changes in the market environment,? although the declining value of the Canadian dollar against the American greenback wasn?t specifically cited as a reason.

The Xbox One isn't selling enough? :D

I think its more to do with the value of the Canadian dollar, but according to the article the PS4's are still sold out in Canada with lots of back-orders still waiting for their PS4's and with the Xbox One not changing in price it doesn't seem like Sony is worried about their competitor gaining more sales due to them making the price increase.

Good on Sony for being sold out. Hopefully the PS4 will make a serious contribution to their finances. I would be disappointed though if this creeped out to a few more markets though.

I expect this is 100% to do with exchange rates, so I doubt it'll spread. $399 CAD is roughly what, $360, so this brings the prices in line.

Still way cheaper than we get over here in the EU!

I'm only slightly impressed by this, isn't it true that a lot of tech stuff is very expensive in Australia compared to any other country?

The PS4 is $550 in Australia, not sure where the $750 came from.

But yes, everything is more expensive in Australia.

Property, fuel, cars, electricity, water, food, electronics, clothes, etc etc.

For example: I bought a pair of Nike running shoes for $60 at a sports store in the US   (Academy)

In Aus those same shoes are $220...

They must have flown them business class to Australia..

You'd think it would be cheaper considering you're closer to the factories in China than the USA etc

value of Kinect.

I laughed. Hard.

prices of games have also gone up 10$ to 69.99 it ####in' sucks.

Damn. That's ridiculous. I almost never, as in maybe once a year, buy games for full retail price. I think they're really hurting themselves doing things like this.

Look at how well games sell on sale. People will gobble them up on Steam when they're on sale in bulk, even if they have no intention of ever playing them.

That's because you guys want to play the game at the released date. I never buy games at the released date, I wait 6 months to purchase it at 1/3 of the original price.

So you save $20 for waiting 6 months. A whopping $3.33 / month you're saving. What do you do with all that extra cash?

well to tell you the truth, I should say that I save half of the original price which is around $30 bucks... I rather wait and pay$29 dollars than go and get a game for $60 or more.

I understand. For me, games land in 3 categories:

1) get it on release day, willing to pay full price

2) can wait until it hits a Steam / PS+ sale when it's < $10

3) never will get the game, no matter its price

Future Shop is still selling them at 60$.

I can understand the hardware since the profit margin is really low and they need to recover the cost of making it but the games should stay at 60$. They will sell A LOT less games in Canada at 70$ and this would definitely not be a good move. In the end they wont make more money by selling them at 70$ since they will sell less of them. 70$ + taxes is over 80$. I know few people who are willing to pay that kind of money for a game. People will do like they did when i was young and start renting the games again, buy less games and buy used only. When i was young a game in Canada could go as high as 120$ buying them new was pretty much a no go outside of birthday. All my friends owned had at best between 5 and 10 SNES/Genesis games. We rented everything.

By the way things are going right now i will probably skip this gen. Expensive hardware. Expensive software. Gfx less good than my 4 years old mid range PC. I gonna upgrade my PC and continue buying games cheap on Steam.  Stores in Canada are awful. They rarely do sales and overprice everything. Anyway my PC will soon need an upgrade for my work my cpu is kinda really old and i would not mind buying a new one for image/video editing and multitasking.

[edit]

This said i think they are quick to fire the gun. Right now at the time i'm speaking 400$ USD equals 443$ CAD. So they effectively "steal" us 7$. If the canadian dollar goes up a bit it will make the matters worse. Sony should have upped the price to 425-30$ for now and see how things are going with the canadian dollar. Right now they pretty much lose the price advantage. If you want to get Titanfall the XBox One is actually 10$ cheaper and you get Kinect/Media for whatever it's worth in canada (not a lot imo). At 430$ Sony would keep the price advantage even for people interested in Titanfall and the free PSN+ games are an interesting bonus.

Sometime you gotta lose some money to make more later. Sony is not always good at counting numbers ...

Yeah, so far I've purchased my Sony PS4 and lets say I'm dissapointed with the game selection. It feels like we waited 6 years to get some unfinished gaming console with about 2 solid games.
