I went to apps/itunes store setting on my iphone and ticked the apps under the automatic downloads. any ideas? it's ios 7.

#Michael
downloaded from itunes on a computer That is why. iDevices do not automatically download apps that have been downloaded via itunes on a computer. You need to sync the device using a physical cable or have it setup for wifi syncing.

Brendeth
In the iTunes & App Store in Settings, you can enable Automatic Downloads. That is meant to automatically download new purchases made on other devices, providing you are using the same Apple ID.
#Michael
This should do it: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4539 You can see by my screenshot that I have it turned off. I don't want auto download from other devices to happen so I keep it off.
