Report: EA secures rights to Titanfall 2

The option was reportedly contingent on original game's performance, which we understand has been quite strong.

Electronic Arts has secured sequel rights for Respawn Entertainment's multiplayer shooter Titanfall, a reputable source has informed GameSpot.

The option to land Titanfall 2 was based on the performance of the original, our source said. Official sales data is not available, but from what we're hearing, Titanfall has performed well and even helped boost Xbox One sales. We already know that's true in the UK.

An EA representative told GameSpot, "We do not comment on rumor or speculation. Right now all our focus is on supporting all the fans worldwide enjoying Titanfall."

The original Titanfall is available only on Xbox and PC platforms. Terms of EA's agreement to publish Titanfall 2 are not clear, so we don't know yet if PlayStation and/or Nintendo fans will get a crack at the rumored next game in the series.

EA CFO Blake Jorgensen said previously that he is "sure" that potential sequels to Titanfall could come to PlayStation and/or Nintendo platforms.

Titanfall launched March 11 for Xbox One and PC. The Xbox 360 version was delayed again today to a release on April 8. For more, check out our Titanfall review.

MS probably had a go at this, but it's EA, if it's not coming out for your internet enabled fridge it's not EA.

Heh - quite strong.  Two words - massive UNDERstatement!

Even the XB360 port (not done by Respawn) has been delayed - likely because they got a look at the final XB1/PC product and dragged theirs back to the garage for more rework.

Hmm. I figured Respawn had more class than to stick with EA after the Xbox/PC only BS they pulled with Titanfall (1). There go my hopes for a non-Origin (Steam) version of Titanfall 2. Oh well. Looks like I'll be skipping that one too.

Which leads to the following - why is Steam that important?

I have both Steam and Origin installed - is one that more important than the other - even from a MP standpoint?

You and I are even in the same part of the US (eastern US) - unless you have a rather strange ISP, the bandwidth issue (Steam vs. Origin) is either miniscule or zero.

Or do you simply hate/despise EA?

I gotta say even if it was a long time ago Origin didn't used to be all that great.  I wouldn't say it deserves the reputation anymore, but I'm not surprised it has it.

I think mostly because Steam was there first so you'd have many games on it already. Then Origin came along, making you have to install a separate app just so that you can play the game you want

That, and/or people hate EA so much :)

Myself? Don't really care. Open the app, play the game, then close/quit the app once you've finished playing. Easy

Sim City's next DLC will allow you to run Angel City. Make sure you built conveniently placed walls for optimal pilot mobility and keep up with factory production for Hammond Industries.

So I guess Titanfall 2 will be coming to the PS4.. probably Wii U if they use the same engine as the first one.

Not really excited about it tbh, I prefer to play fps on PC rather than console and its already on PC plus its a new I.P now with new mechanics (jetpacks+mechs) but Titanfall 2 will just be more of the same.

Thought it was always understood that Titanfall was like Mass Effect and Bioshock et al, basically a timed exclusive. Fully expect it to be on PS4 next year, or even by the end of this year. Of course right now it's "we have no plans, for the life of the product", but that could mean any number of things. Titanfall 2 will defo come out on PS4. EA won't allow MS to lock this down, and i don't think MS are willing to pay EA prices.

According to sources: http://www.polygon.com/2014/3/19/5526942/report-ea-lands-deal-for-titanfall-2-sequel-wont-be-microsoft

TitanFall 2 wont be a Microsoft exclusive.

Not surprised after it was said sales projections of TitanFall on the PS4 and PS3 would've made more money for EA than the exclusivity rights that Microsoft paid them:

"Sony also used it's own metrics in a meeting with EA last week and showed them what they would have sold on the ps3 and ps4. The money EA took from MS doesn't even begin to cover it. The EA guys went over the math and agreed. EA is in full 'We're so sorry, Sony' mode currently.

Yeah, Sony wins again.

Pretty clear that MS was going to lose this exclusive.

A third party developer is just leaving too much money on the table to stay on one console.

Meant that Titanfall 1 is going to be on PS4 as well, not just starting with Titanfall 2. And what exactly is Sony winning? It's just another game on the platform. It's not like MS isn't capable of matching Sony for exclusives, it's not exactly magic, just money - which MS has more of, by the way. They just don't care enough to spend that money on exclusive development.

Fully expect MS to throw a big bag of cash at EA to keep this one on the Xbox One too

The only way I can see that happening is that MS throws as much to EA as they think they will lose on PS4 sales on Titanfall 1. Any less and a port is incoming.

That wouldn't be hard for them, they're hardly strapped for cash

I don't know how Sony wins here. The cats out of the bag and getting Microsoft huge sales. Future versions don't really play into that.

As long as this doesn't turn into a yearly franchise I'm happy. Hopefully the additional $$ they'll be getting will mean a better game.

Sony wins.. because MS has lost what could have been a solid exclusive for the microsoft platforms.  Now I am not saying they won't have other exclusives or anything.. but they have essentially just lost one.
