in search of engine oil.

ok, first, i wanna say hello to all neowinans :)

now, here's the thing.

for the past week, i have learned that choosing the right engine oil, is difficult, and complex.

so i'm asking your help\opinions.

i have 2011 mitsubishi pajero\montero\shogun 3.2 diesel.(200hp)

now, i want to treat my car, on my own, to know that the oil i pay for, is the best, and not some 5w30 label oil in the dealership.

 

 

here's my manufacture spec's:

5w30
ACEA: A5\B5 A4\B4 A3\B3
API-CF4

ok, from what i have learned
A5\B5 is top line, combining of A1B1-A3B3-A4B4
CF4 is obsolete, CF is better.

here's where i find it difficult to choose, i have 2 systems(catalytic converter + DPF) on my car that need ACEA: C1, C2, C3.

and i cannot, no matter where i looked, to able to find 5W30 A5B5 C2\C3 oil.

i looked at this brands: Royal purple(good for the engine, very bad for DPF & catalytic converter).
AMSOIL, Mobil1, Valvoline, Motul, Castrol, Liqui molly,.



so, i ask for your advice, what oil would be best, for my engine?

I used to use Mobil 1, switched to Royal Purple - its not like my car all of a sudden lost 10,000 miles and started running like it gained 100hp

Its like everything else - you cant really go wrong as long as you go with a name brand.  The difference between "the best", and maybe "the best" is moot.

Dont get caught up in the details - arguing that is for people who think they know more than they do, and are usually just regurgitating what they were told.

Find 1 person who can tell you, with imperical evidence, where Royal Purple has benefits over Mobil 1, or Castrol Syntech, or any other premium brand.

Synthetic engine oil is very standardized. It really doesn't matter which brand you use as long as you stick to the appropriate viscosity specs for your engine and climate. It's a commodity like milk. As long as it's been pasteurized and homogenized, you can't really taste the difference between different brands of milk with the same fat content. It's the same with the engine oil. Don't over think it. Just get what the manufacturer recommends.

VW recommends Castrol for VWs, so do I. As for your car, there are lots of debates, the consensus: Go with your manuf specs, whatever it is.

i really  think i would go with castrol magnatec, but i'm looking into another german oil, rheinol, they look very promising.

dear zhivago, i know from life, not to go into to much detail over something, especially in real time\life, like u said: "dont over think it, just do it".

but, i tried it, and i cancelled in the last minute, and 8 liter shipment, of royal purple hps, because it would have damage my DPF after 5000 k.

the guy who warned me, said i need to find an oil, that match my oem spec.

and thats what iv'e been trying to do, but  i'm confuse\worried that oil who isn't certified as c1 c2(low emissions ) would damage my 2 system i mentioned.

thats why i'm stuck, so i'm here.

anyway, i have contacted mitsubishi-motors UK, and they are checking the issue, so i hope they will solve my dilemma.

This is what you can do.

 

You can stop by a Mitsubishi dealership, go to the service/accessories counter, and ask them to show you a proper engine oil for your car and engine specifically.

 

They'll show you something like this:

The problem is twofold:

 

1) Mitsubishi doesn't have its own oil refineries - this is just a re-branded Castrol/Shell/Mobil/BP product.

2) Dealerships are notoriously greedy and charge a premium on everything.

 

So, just write down the specs and get exactly the same canister with a Castrol/Shell/Mobil/BP label on it with a discount at your local shop.

p.s. that guy did the right thing when he dissuaded you from buying royal purple oil. I wouldn't trust this brand either.

I have always used mobil 1 since it came out.  I have no problems recommending this brand oil.  Even at tear engine tear down (was doing some major performance work to one of my engines), the engine was clean at 60,000 hard miles.  I would use a good filter with it to help even more.  I use mobil 1 filters or bosch and usually change between 5 and 10,000 miles (3 and 5000 on the engine that had work done).
