Why I love windows phone and don't want to switch to another mobile OS

Recommended Posts

I have 2 android tablets, I have used iOS, and I have a WP7 and WP8 device. Recently I have been considering trying another mobile OS for the mere fact that I can get the device for free, whereas the only WP device I can get free is basically the Lumia 920 I have already.

I'm a PC guy, but I don't mind apple. I really like being on the cutting edge of tech, or at least having that option. iOS and apple to me really aren't interested in that, so to me that rules them out.

The main benefit to me with Android is that they have clearly been the front runner in the technology race, even though WP is catching up with devices like the Lumia 1520. The prices for WP8 devices VS. similar tech in an Android device has been my main limiting factor. If you consider I can get a GS4 Active or HTC one 32gb for free, VS nothing really competing with those devices directly and still costing $100 or more, I felt like I might consider trying an android device for my phone.

The problem I have run into is that some manufacturers don't really update their devices and they get outdated rather quickly. I know you can load cyanogen mod or other unofficial updates, and I have done so on my main tablet, but I have also sacrificed certain functionality in doing so.

Another problem I found with android is that unless you do the unofficial ROM loading, you may be locked into certain space hogging OEM apps. I find this problem rather prominent on my Samsung Galaxy tab 7 2.0. The device has been updated officially several times, yet to try to keep all the built in unremovable apps up to date takes up quite a lot of the built in storage space. Considering the device only comes with 8gb, and adding a Micro SD card doesn't allow your apps to be installed to it by default, there really is very little I can do with this device.

On WP8, there is no such thing as an unremovable OEM app. You can remove anything. I don't understand the limitations of android not allowing you to remove whatever you want. The OS should depend on no apps, and should be complete in itself and need no apps.

To me, this keeps my interest in WP8 strong. The Apps that are out are not really a limit for me, unless you count candy crush or minecraft. There are knock offs, but the originals should be there already. I love Windows Phone 8, and think any company that doesn't push it needs to be public about their reasons for not supporting it.

This isn't realistic... OEMs and Carriers add apps to attempt to differentiate themselves. This is a major reason Windows Phone has struggled to get OEM traction... Without any ability to carve our a niche the OEM has no way except to compete on a commodity level... This is great for us consumers, but not good for profits so you can see how that is playing out...

The only users who care about removing the OEM or Carrier applications are us technical users. ROM flashing isn't an issue for us...

Though I agree that it is nice that WP allows this out of the box. Though it isn't 100% of the carrier apps. There is still tucked in under the hood that are important at times :).

I'm not too sure what you mean with this sentence. Are you saying that more app developers should be working to have their apps work on WP? Or do you mean that companies should be pushing their employees to start adopting WP instead of the alternatives?

I've not really used WP, so I can't comment on whether I like it or not. What I can say is that I have had no reason since switching to Android to switch again, and I think that was the biggest issue for WP - they released too late in the game which slowed down the adoption rate.

But hey, I've heard good things from friends and coworkers that do use WP. To each their own. (Y)

What I mean is, any company that makes anything, whether it be a phone or an app, should promote that product. For some reason it seems more likely to have these companies promote the android devices and apps then just promoting everything they make.

I'd love to have a WP8 device. Specially the Icon. But well, not easy to come by in Canada.

The only app that I felt kind of pushed into so far on WP is Here Maps. But even that can be bypassed without much hassle.

  • 2 weeks later...

I use windows phone because I want to use my phone to accomplish tasks and be on my way.

I don't use androids because I do not want to work for my phone to accomplish tasks.

I don't use iPhones simply because it is too restrictive to my tastes and hardware does not excel in my preferred direction.

It's amazing how much crap you have put with android.   I have an S4 there often times when Samsungs own apps get hung up and i have restart. Thinking about going back iphone because the apps are still so much androids. W8 is intresting but I see what they come up with.

Make a list of your required apps. Search WP8 store. If you find all/most of them, switch to WP else go to iPhone. Android is cancer.
