Facebook Buys Oculus Rift For $2 Billion

His crowning achievement is Beefcakes of War, 'nuff said.

He's a generic console shlock dev, not interested at all in his ability/talent at producing mass-market drivel. Console gamers can keep him.

He's retired, last I checked.  But I'm not exactly sure why his opinion would be less valid if you don't like his games.  I don't like Minecraft, but that's not why Notch irritates me.

His opinion isn't relevant because as far as I'm concerned he hasn't done anything to make himself relevant. He's responsible for a trio of generic console TPS games, big whoop.

Notch in all his hackery, is still "the guy" that ignited a whole new genre of games on the PC. The number of "Minecraft-clones" is proof of that.

He's also partially responsible for some fantastic action games going all the way back to Unreal (and stuff even before that I'm not incredibly interested in.)

So no, he's hardly just the Gears of War guy.

He was "involved" at best with Unreal (which was another designer's idea), whereas with Beefcakes he was lead designer.

I wouldn't really say working on Unreal is anything particularly special to be honest, the series has always pretty much existed as id clones.

i have a hard time believing someone would risk not being able to put food on the table, or risk losing having a roof over their head over principles.

I've been 'homeless' for the last couple of months due to steadfastly sticking my principles. I'm not on the street, thank ######, but it was a very close call. It's still a horrible situation and yet I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

Lots of them do, look at 360/X1 losing indies to PS4 because of the restrictions MS used to impose. Are they all in the same position as Notch and raking in money? Nope.

Even those who were successful like Jonathan Blow said he has spent all his money he made on his new game but he won't release for X1. Some people have principles and stick to them. It's not always about $ for them.

Yeah, even after MS changed, those developers stuck to their principles. That shows just how far they are willing to go for their principles, which is a powerful thing.

The lesson is to avoid angering them in the first place.

Can we swing the conversation back to FB/Oculus rather than attacking devs please.

Well to be fair, if the developers are going to make public comments against the deal, people are going to react to that.

Just to ask, are you referring to the times before ID@Xbox was announced? If so, it wasn't a change but more-so Sony being publicly ready to distribute than information faster to the Indies.

I respect Cliffy for his comments about Oculus, I agree with him around how Oculus don't have to worry as much as Facebook being a giant they are; will financially and provide resource to help them do they're job better. I also agree with him around Notch. It honestly seems like the guy didn't even bother to speak with Oculus around the terms which they agreed on around independence and creative direction after the buy-out with Facebook. More so just pulled the plug based on a internet conception of the company. It's a childish, arrogant move which speaks everything to me.

Someone is a spoiled brat because they don't like a company/companies ethos? Gosh, Neowin must be full of them then... right??? right?  :/ I forgot we live in a time when a developer HAS to release his or her game on every platform, even if they have reasons for not wanting to. You know, because a game pretty much solely made by 1 individual (at least initially) is really owned by the man, and not by that individual.

Not what I said. not like you care, but...

If he stuck to his principles like you said, he wouldn't be making games now. but lets ignore 90% of this guys tirade on that subject and pick what we want so he doesn't appear like a total douche ;)

Either way, Notch is the only one was has stopped developing for the OR. in fact there's more devs interested now than there was. and Notch never had much of an interest anyway.  So his opinion on the matter is rather irrelevant.

I'd rather have the opinion of developers who's actually interested in developing for it(everyone else) like CliffyB and Chris Roberts.

That may be true, but most don't care about that piece of info.  To most publicly, it looks like MS was just reacting to Sony, not that they had any plans before Sony laid out their ideas.

Although from a general perspective if not much reading was done into the matter that conclusion can be drawn, for discussions sake, use true understanding rather than perspective.

I think it should be noted that a number of Valves VR people have left to join Oculus now.    It seems only the vocal internet minority is so against FB owning them.

  • 4 weeks later...

Zuckerberg tried out PS4 VR headset a week before Oculus VR acquisition

http://www.polygon.com/2014/4/24/5646514/zuckerberg-sussed-out-ps4-vr-headset-before-oculus-vr-buyout

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg went hands-on with Sony's virtual reality headset, Project Morpheus, a week before buying VR headset manufacturer Oculus VR, Gamespot reports PlayStation marketing executive Guy Longworth as saying.

Speaking during a Games Marketing Summit 2014 session, Longworth recalled how Zuckerberg asked, "Can I have a tech demo?" for Project Morpheus and how he was curious why Zuckerberg was interested in seeing Sony's headset.

He bought Oculus Rift a week later, I think it was more than merely 'Geek' interest. He must believe VR will sell if he invested in it.

And you assume technology has stood still?

On topic: He will have been interested in this long before then.
