New Xbox One notifications let you know when other gamers think you're being a jerk

The Xbox One's simplified Reputation system aims to keep like-minded gamers playing together, and now the folks in Redmond plan to notify you if you fall of out the community's good graces. Are you the sort of player who doesn't ruffle too many feathers? You'll be just fine -- the occasional bad report won't do much harm. Starting this month though, Microsoft will reach out to trollish gamers when negative feedback from fellow players drags their reputations down into "needs work" territory. Prolonged abrasiveness will ultimately land them in the red "avoid me" zone, where matchmaking for games becomes more difficult and certain features like Twitch livestreaming could be restricted. Seems like a pretty big price to pay when the alternative is to behave like a civilized human being, doesn't it?

I've seen this, but i've never seen a way to actually rate a person. At the same time I've never looked, guess its just another one of those not so easy to see features.

I'm guessing that you just use the reporting system.

It's not going to stop them but the more naming and shaming that can get done, the better - People are in love with their online handles so a nice big "this person is a dick" label attached to a username is brilliant  (Y)

Sony need to copy this.

And MS, here you go, don't hold back

Pointless.

Agreed, the only time I hear people making use of it is when they lose & want to make false reports.

On the 360 it was useless too, even if you had the patience to use it with the slow Guide / too many clicks.

Would be great if it worked as intended, but unfortunately it falls on gamers to do so and they abuse it (N)

If it's easy to use and actually filters out the scum, it could be great. I'm still curious how they're going to prevent the raging tweeners from submitting false reports.

In this day of age, the majority of people on Xbox Live are trash talking kids who disrespect anyone they come across. If I were to out perform in say a FPS game by killing the same person 5 times in a row, they're going to give me bad rep.

This feature was pointless before, and will be the same.

According to this: http://news.xbox.com/2013/07/games-reputation-feature it will be smart enough to know it is being abused.

The algorithm is sophisticated and won?t penalize you for a few bad reports. Even good players might receive a few player feedback reports each month and that is OK. The algorithm weighs the data collected so if a dozen people suddenly reporting a single user, the system will look at a variety of factors before docking their reputation. We?ll verify if those people actually played in an online game with the person reported ? if not, all of those player?s feedback won?t matter as much as a single person who spent 15 minutes playing with the reported person. The system also looks at the reputation of the person reporting and the alleged offender, frequency of reports from a single user and a number of other factors.

It would still be easy for a group of people who played against you to report negatively because they lost. So the algorithm checks, sees you played together and ignores the first flag, you now have potentially 32 players (BF4) going to town with your rep. It also doesn't work if people don't report bad players to begin with, so the malicious group get away with their false reports because their rep isn't yellow/orange/red.

Here's hoping they keep up with it though and this is just the start of bigger plans (Y) I like the idea of rewarding good players more. It's basically briebery but at least it encourages good behaviour and cuts down on the ****s

I think this shows how hard it is to come up with a system that cannot be abused or require end user involvement.

If the people participating are not willing to report bad behavior, then I don't think any system would work unless you wanted MS to become big brother and monitor all behavior themselves live.

I wonder if the algorithm will also realize a single person is running around reporting bad rep for a lot of people and dock their reputation.

Most likely , the system should detect it. It's just a matter of wether their system is set up to report it, which I suspect it is, most likely this will lead to a monitoring of the player rather than a direct action by the system though to verify.

Since it's easy to detect, but unlike groups trolling a good player or someone they don't like, it's not as easy to verify automatically if it's what's happening. After all people generally don't give good reports only bad reports so most people could be detected there, but malicious use/trolling should be easier to detect and be flagged for manual monitoring/verification.
