Turkish government takes down YouTube too

Turkish government carries on with its crackdown on the internet and added YouTube to its notoriously long list of banned web sites. YouTube blockage came hours after a key security meeting was held in foreign ministry?s office to discuss the leakage to the internet of some voice recordings where some high-level officials are allegedly heard talking about Syria issue.

There is still no official announcement by T?B, the government authority in charge of internet regulation and the organ who implements blocking decisions. However, YouTube?s URL and title appeared on BTK?s (higher organ that includes T?B) web page where the blocked URLs are listed.

The site is still accessible through some ISPs, but the blocking is expected to be implemented fully in an hour?s time by all ISPs.

The government banned Twitter last week on the grounds that the company fails to remove ?illegal? content according to Turkish authorities. Yesterday, an administrative court ruled for the suspension of the execution of Twitter blocking.

It's a shame, as Turkey was at one time looking like a progressive country and was shaping up to be the first predominantly Islamic country to join the EU. Now it has fallen into authoritarianism.

aren't the elections soon??

i seriously hope for more secular government next!     i love turkey, and i know most people there reverence Ataturk, who gave them national identity, made sure it is not tied to religion.

so i trust that the majority will support a less conservative leader.  turkey is in great shape too, so no need for desperation when choosing who to vote for.

Google Official Online Security Blog: Google?s Public DNS intercepted in Turkey By Steven Carstensen March 29, 2014 4:45 PM

We have received several credible reports and confirmed with our own research that Google?s Domain Name System (DNS) service has been intercepted by most Turkish ISPs (Internet Service Providers).
A DNS server tells your computer the address of a server it?s looking for, in the same way that you might look up a phone number in a phone book. Google operates DNS servers because we believe that you should be able to quickly and securely make your way to whatever host you?re looking for, be it YouTube, Twitter, or any other.
But imagine if someone had changed out your phone book with another one, which looks pretty much the same as before, except that the listings for a few people showed the wrong phone number. That?s essentially what?s happened: Turkish ISPs have set up servers that masquerade as Google?s DNS service.

Not sure what fantasy version of Turkey you are talking about, they were knowingly hiding bin Laden and many top leaders have ties to AQ and the Taliban, they talked a good game and a few gullible types (Obama) ,might have believed the BS but anyone with half a brain knew what was really going on
