Heart of the Matter : is high cholesterol as bad as everything says it is?

Recommended Posts

Seems like no one can get their science straight.  One scientific community says high fat/cholesterol is bad, more grains/carbs are good.  Others says high fat/cholesterol are good, sugars/carbs are bad.  All the meanwhile, many people are dying from heart disease while people argue about the cause.  I guess I'll just eat what tastes good until science makes up its mind.

All that happened when every body pushed the less meat more carbs is everyone got FAT! ... That's why everyone is dying from heart disease. Because everyone is overweight.

It's also why all see when you walk around walmart is Fat / Obese people. Going low / Lower carb is the best thing i've ever done.

Yeah, I definitely agree with limiting carbs.  I'm just not sure that cholesterol is innocent in heart disease.  For instance, my grandmother had clogged arteries and had open heart surgery about 15 years ago to correct it.  They put her generic lipitor after the surgery, and she hasn't had any further clogs.  That was with no change to her diet and exercise.  It seems like a very complex issue with many different factors that could potentially play a role.

this is from a show called catalyst from here in Aus. Catalyst is a generally respected science program, it has been for years, but this particular episode has been slammed. This isn't just your average "arrr! the pharma industry is out to rip us all off" stuff. People actually stopped taking their cholesterol meds because of this drivel.*

This video highlights all of the problems with that particular episode:

Don't mean to be a jerk, OP, but if you think that this is AMAZING your standards are pretty low.

If you exercise, you need carbs for energy. People who say they're going low-carb are probably out of shape and fat to begin with.

I am 42 and having a 2 year old made me rethink my current eating habits as it relates to my longevity. I had high Cholesterol, High Triglycerides and simply cut back (not cut out) on my portions of high carb, sugar, and fats. I also increased my fiber intake a bit with various high fiber foods and lowered both Cholesterol and Triglycerides to medically accepted levels. I also lost about 45 lbs to boot. All without taking any Rx and very little exercise. Basically, instead of 6 pieces of pizza I would only have 2.

During going low carb I walked 3.5 miles a day for 163 days. I started walking July 4th 2011 ... started low carb in May 2011 and continued walking 3.5 miles every day until July 4th 2012. I felt just fine.

I just try to moderate everything. The main thing I'm trying to cut on is sodium but it's very hard to find products that are low enough that I can still eat 3 square meals and keep within 1500 mg's. Very hard. It's nothing to see 800mg's or more out of just one meal. I like the low sodium alternatives but there is just way too few.

I have high blood pressure, on 2 meds for it and yet I don't drink, smoke or any such and keep physically active. I don't even drink soda pop or juices so it has to be the sodium?

genetics at play here my friend. you should increase potassium intake. low potassium affects blood pressure in people with elevated levels the same as high sodium.

I'm about 6'4", 190 lbs, very very low body fat (~10%, I concern my doctor)

I'm not trying to paint myself as a fitness god, I'm not. I've just always been really skinny (used to be this height, 145 lbs, started working out and put on a lot of muscle over the past 5 years)

Carbs make up about 75% of my diet. I love bread, and have the world's worst sweet tooth. I think the difference for me is that I'm very active and I don't eat a lot. I have a small stomach, i'm usually done eating while everyone else is just getting started. I walk everywhere, I avoid taking a vehicle if my destination is less than 2 miles away.

I think most people lose weight when they cut out carbs because carbs are easy, while protein/fats are harder to come by. You get rid of them and your caloric intake is going to go down. It's all calories in vs calories out.  Don't suss it out to  be anything else.

this is true for weight loss, because of physics, but not true for fat loss. high carbs help you maintain muscle mass,so more of the energy expenditure comes at the expense of fat. two identical bodies can consume the same amount of energy daily but with different macronutrients, and lose the same amount of weight, but one comes out looking like a greek god, while the other still looks flabby.

thats good. just keep your levels in check. what kind of activity do you do? may i suggest you do some high intensity interval training, of the aerobic variety? i know people who had amazing results.
