Windows Phone 8.1 SD card requirements for app installs.

Recommended Posts

With Windows Phone 8.1 users will be able to install apps to their SD cards (if the developers allow it that is) but with this new feature MS has also set a requirement for SD cards.

Reports are that you'll need at least a class 6 SD card with a class 10 card being recommended.  The OS will check the card when you first install it and if it's under 6, like a class 4 and so on, then the option to install apps to the card will not be available to users.

This is to make sure the performance is there and that people don't run into any issues when running apps off of them, last thing we need is users complaining about poor performance when the SD card could be to blame.

Also on another note, the new 3 column support feature will be limited to devices with a physical screen size of 4.5" and bigger.  Anything under that won't have the option, so that leaves out all the 4" and 4.3" devices out there.

Is it will allow you to move the app completely or just move some of the data from the app ans split between the phone and SD card?

If MS would put a warning about the speed and tell users to avoid slow down of app performance, use a faster sd card, it would remove a lot of those possible issues of performance (perception) complaints.

From the looks of it you'll be able to move the app completely to the SD card though it sounds like it'll be developer controlled.   They could do a warning, I agree but people could ignore this or just not read it and hit Ok and then complain afterwards.
