OKCupid Website Blocks Firefox Because of Mozilla CEO's Anti-Gay Beliefs

Mozilla Firefox users who try to use popular dating service OKCupid are currently being shown the above message, encouraging them not to use Firefox. The reason? Mozilla's new CEO Brendan Eich opposes gay marriage. That's how you play hardball.

Here's the full text of the message, which is followed by links to Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Opera, and Safari. After reading the entire message, there's a link that allows you to proceed. So while it's not an all out blockade, it's still an impressive expression of political beliefs that could potentially alienate a lot of users. According to the company's metrics, it has a half-billion users worldwide.

Hello there, Mozilla Firefox user. Pardon this interruption of your OkCupid experience.

Mozilla's new CEO, Brendan Eich, is an opponent of equal rights for gay couples. We would therefore prefer that our users not use Mozilla software to access OkCupid.

Politics is normally not the business of a website, and we all know there's a lot more wrong with the world than misguided CEOs. So you might wonder why we're asserting ourselves today. This is why: we've devoted the last ten years to bringing people?all people?together. If individuals like Mr. Eich had their way, then roughly 8% of the relationships we've worked so hard to bring about would be illegal. Equality for gay relationships is personally important to many of us here at OkCupid. But it's professionally important to the entire company. OkCupid is for creating love. Those who seek to deny love and instead enforce misery, shame, and frustration are our enemies, and we wish them nothing but failure.

If you want to keep using Firefox, the link at the bottom will take you through to the site.

However, we urge you to consider different software for accessing OkCupid:

The issue at hand is that Mozilla's new CEO Eich donated $1000 in support of Proposition 8 in California. The 2008 ballot measure changed the legal definition of marriage in California to be a union between a man and a woman. It was ultimately approved because of a lot of dirty political advertising funded by people like Eich.

Opposition the the appointment has been rising since Eich's appointment on March 24th. Activist developers almost immediately started boycotting Firefox.

Over the weekend, Mozilla sought to distance itself from Eich's previous political activity, stating publicly that as a company, it supports marriage equality.

Mozilla's mission is to make the Web more open so that humanity is stronger, more inclusive and more just. This is why Mozilla supports equality for all, including marriage equality for LGBT couples. No matter who you are or who you love, everyone deserves the same rights and to be treated equally.

It appears that message has gone unheeded by OKCupid and that the company will oppose Mozilla so long as Eich is still at the helm. We say "appears" because this is a little weird. It's not unprecedented for startup services full of liberal employees to advocate on behalf of gay rights, but this is a bold step. We've reached out to OKCupid to makes sure that this is something they did on purpose and not some weird hack. It gives us a bit of pause that the link to Microsoft's download page reads "Internet Exploder"?not to mention the fact that a blockade like this would go forward when Mozilla has already publicly said it believes in marriage equality. We'll update if we learn more but for now it appears that OKCupid is taking a stand.

While I feel this is all being blown out of proportion, I don't think donating the money was a smart move on Eich's part.

I find the whole thing hilarious. They (whoever stupid groups are behind the whole drama / crap) want equality, but only when others agree with them. If people have different opinions, all hell breaks lose. Talk about double standards. Quite pathetic.

rather strange, but as long as the CEO is not putting his feelings and the link into the product i do not think its a problem. People are allowed to have their opinions even if they are unpopular.

OKCupid should delete any JavaScript in their codebase then, as Brendan Eich is responsible for it's creation.

Exactly, these anti-company statements by those who are pro for gay marriage are ridiculous. I could care less about his stance on gay marriage, Firefox has nothing to do with it. But, just like with the chik-fila situation when "they" start boycotting them because they dont support "equality" is just as dumb as they are, because many of the companies they do support have the same agenda, being anti-gay. If OKCupid wants to boycot firefox over this, they have a few other companies to boycot, like you mentioned Javascript.

I think it's pretty bad if they're going after him for his political beliefs. I could understand if the guy was discriminating in the role of his job but come on, this is kind of like bullying in a way.

What next, fire everyone who voted for a particular candidate?

Exactly he isnt pushing his agenda on me, or anyone that uses firefox, but OKCupid is trying to push their beliefs to everyone who visits that website with firefox, pretty lame in my opinion.

So... anybody who campaigns for equality is in a "stupid group" and peddling "drama" and/or "crap" in your eyes? Who's pathetic here?

Being against equality for ALL humans no matter your skin colour, race, sexual preference, etc, isn't a valid opinion, it's bigotry and has no place in our society.

I think what he is saying is those groups main purpose is to start drama, start campaigns and rallys against those who do not agree with them, and I feel he is right about that. If you disagree with their stance, your a bigot, your a racist, etc etc

Yeah, this is flat out dumb on OKcupid's part.  "We don't like discrimination so watch us as we discriminate"?  People on soapboxes are so hypocritical.  You can't claim to support alternative lifestyles if you aren't willing to accept ALL of them...even those you don't like.

It's their software, it's their (Mozilla's) choice...however, I think they are shooting themselves in the foot. Its discrimination however you look at it, and it's wrong.

I think Mozilla just needs to just go ahead and collapse, as it seems to bedoing anyway.

The funny thing is, Mozilla does support LGBT rights, heck the CEOs boss is in support of LGBT rights. OKCupid is all about the user they say, well why is it they sell your data to the highest bidder through marketing agencies? Something Mozilla tries to stop.

Seriously. At this point these pro gay groups are the biggest bullies on the planet. Just look at that pathetic group, GLADD. If any TV show doesn't have a gay character or gay content, they are all over them and threaten them. Maybe the writers/producers just aren't inspired to put that in there. Putting something in a show just for the sake of having it is stupid.

Funny.  We all thought that access to certain sites would be financially motivated...

I personally support equality for all sexualities.  I do not, however, support this position of "Your personal beliefs are not aligned to ours, so you can't use our site!"

They dont block it.  Go to the OKC link, scroll down and click continue to site.

Click bait news at its finest.

There's nothing wrong with putting a message up, it's their site, they can do what they want.

Now, if they were actually blocking users based on browser, I would be one of the first to publish a workaround, because that's a line that does not get crossed.
