A friend is going to China next week.

We usually use Facebook Messenger to communicate but I believe that may be blocked in China.

If it is, what alternates do you suggest?

Skype works. I've successfully skyped with a friend of mine who lives and works in Shanghai.

Skype has worked well for me as well, I have only tried the text chat mode, though. Calls should be okay too, though some delay should be expected.

Again, another vote for Skype - I communicate with a Chinese friend on a weekly basis, works great :)

There is skype, viber, whatsapp, and a bunch of others.  Personally I recommend skype.

Are you sure Viber and WhatsApp work between China and the UK?

I am fairly sure but those services are blocked here at work so I cannot double check.  The only one I can access is skype.  I can look later.

Can't comment on Viber but whatsapp works, albeit takes ages to send/rec - hence mostly using Skype ;)
