Pakistan Couple Sentenced to Death Over Text Message

Recommended Posts

LAHORE: A court in eastern Pakistan has sentenced a Christian couple to death for sending a blasphemous text message insulting to Prophet Mohammed (pbuh), their lawyer said Saturday.
Judge Mian Amir Habib handed the death sentence to Shafqat Emmanuel and Shagufta Kausar in a jail in the town of Toba Tek Singh on Friday, defence lawyer Nadeem Hassan told AFP.
Prosecution department officials confirmed the sentence.
The impoverished couple, who are in their forties, have three children and live in the town of Gojra, which has a history of violence against Christians, Hassan said.
Both denied the charges, Hassan said, adding that they would appeal the sentence.
Maulvi Mohammad Hussain, the prayer leader at a local mosque in Gojra, lodged a complaint against couple on July 21 last year for sending him a text message which he said was insulting to Prophet Mohammed (pbuh).

someone who knows this prayer leaders own cell number should let this board know. Myself, and others, know how to clone numbers and send texts, one could send a "blasphemy" text to an official. Then clone the officals number and send another, and another, and another, and another, till all their religious leaders are in turmoil.

Its going to take a while before their culture and religion catches up. They still do things they old way by arranged marriages and the women have very little rights so this should come as no surprise to anyone.

All jokes aside, I wonder why world governments haven't been doing this. It would end a lot of problems by itself.

/walks into room... 'welp, it looks like they all killed each other and the last man standing then blew himself up in a suicide... tell everyone to go home, that's a wrap, the world's safe'.

When in rome, do like the romans do. If I'm in the US and I send a text to the security guard outside White House that I'm going to blow it up, I'm sure I'll heading to Guantanamo on the next flight.

Well you would be threatening to blow up a building with intent to kill people, how does that compare to insulting a religion or god (which harms no one) and being sentenced to death over it?

What a backward country and this is not exclusive to this failed country but most of the Muslim dominated country. They need to look in to inner self and see humanity more than some fake belief.

Let's just say Muslims hold religion more dear than life itself.

As a non Muslim who has read the Quran, I'm not surprised that the religion of peace kills none Muslims so easily, read the book, you'll understand. Religion of peace as long as your Muslim. Death to all others.

I think you guys are missing the bigger picture. Even if everything about the religion were totally true, how does a text message change anything? I think an all-powerful god could handle a nasty word now and then. These people didn't harass religious people, they didn't hurt anyone, they (supposedly) sent a text. They are sentencing someone to death over a text. That is the problem here, not the motivation behind it. o_o

Also, folks, please keep the discussion civil. No need for blanket, hateful statements that generalise far beyond the topic/situation at hand.
