DocM
And I would add that the man who was beated half to death after hitting a kid playing in traffic last week was rescued by a nurse who drove off the mob with her pistol. http://m.detnews.com/topstories/article?a=2014304090047&f=1207 Detroit -- Two people are in the hospital early Wednesday morning after they were shot by a homeowner while allegedly trying to break into an occupied home on the city's west side. The incident occurred in the 19100 block of Asbury Park in an area between Seven Mile and Cambridge. According to police, the suspects broke a window on the one-story home in an attempt to enter. The unidentified homeowner fired at the pair. The owner of the home was uninjured in the incident. Police were on the scene for several hours Wednesday. The shooting is one of a spate of similar incidents that have occurred in the city lately. Other shooting incidents include: ?On March 25, a homeowner shot and killed two men after encountering the pair outside his home in the 14800 block of Dexter. ?On March 7, a woman in her 50s shot and killed a man trying to break into her home in the 22000 block of Grove Street. She heard noises at her rear window and shot the intruder in the chest. ?On March 6, one of two home invaders was fatally shot by a homeowner in the 8200 block of Penrod. ?At 2 a.m. Feb. 22, two men broke into a house on the city's southwest side; the homeowner shot both men. A 21-year-old man died and the other man escaped. ?Earlier on Feb. 22 at 12:30 a.m., a woman, who was surprised by a gunman when she pulled her car into the garage, was able to reach for her own gun and fatally shoot the man. ?A woman on Feb. 17 opened fire on three teens who kicked in her door. The alleged intruders, ages 14, 14 and 15, were caught by police and charged with home invasion. Deckyon 1 Share

DocM
The count of defensive gun uses runs from 1.5 million to 2.5 million a year, yet only about 350 or so are killed by civilians. In the vast majority of cases the threat is enough for them to scatter or a citizens arrest is made. Meanwhile, the number of criminal gun deaths is much lower than the combined defensive uses. I specify criminal uses because at least 66% of gun deaths are suicides. That said, scratch 2 more tonight. A pair of frug dealers invaded an occupied home to take it over as a drug den and were met with rifle fire. One's dead and one's critical. Police Chief Craig's attitude is 'you reap what you sow. Detroiters are fed up.' No sympathy there. Tews 1 Share
Shiranui
A lot of trigger-happy residents.... However, we are talking about Detroit, so until Robocop becomes a reality, I guess you can't blame them for erring on the side of caution.

Deckyon
I hear these stories, and think, sometimes silently; "This is why I carry" And besides, 12ga .00 buck shot at short range makes a really neat spray pattern on the wall. Especially after 8 shells.

McKay
What's a frug dealer? Google is telling me they sold French Bulldogs, or The Frug (pronounced "froog") was a dance craze from the mid-1960s, which included vigorous dance to pop music. It evolved from another dance of the era, the Chicken." The Evil Overlord 1 Share

COKid
And I could post just as many articles as to why guns are not the answer. The notion that owning a gun makes you safer has long been debunked. Here's just one study: http://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/sep/18/gun-ownership-gun-deaths-study Anyway, Detroit certainly must be a terrible place to live. I can see why the OP is so fixated on the topic on Neowin.
