Win 8.1.1 iso bootable USB drive

Recommended Posts

I am presently using Win 8.1.1

Come April 14th, MS will release Win 8.1.1 ISO to general public.

I understand that we can create a bootable Win 8.1.1 iso flash drive.

Like most users, I upgraded from an older Windows version to Win 8, then to Win 8.1 via Windows Store.

As such, I do not have Win 8.1 product key. I have Win 8 product key.

My question is : if I need to reinstall Win 8.1.1, can I use the bootable USB to do that ?

Will it accept my Win 8 key during re-install ?

Thank you.

I can only mark one rely as Best Answer ?

I tried to mark both, but only the most recent one I marked is accepted.

In that case, thank you, devHead, sorry I can't mark yours as answer as well.

I have the generic keys that will allow you to freshly install windows 8.1. But you will need to change the key to your valid key in system properties which will automatically activate successfully. Just send me a message if you need it.

To forum Moderators. My apologies if what I said earlier breaks the terms and agreement. Please let me know in a private message if I did accidently break rules. I didn't think it was wrong since you have to use a valid key (Purchased key) in the end. And 8.1 is free when upgrading from 8.0.

Will everybody be able to download this new ISO?

Or is this MSDN or any other subscription only?

It would be nice if it was for everybody, I have a slow internet connection so It would be annoying to always have to download these big updates on 2 or 3 pc's.

Downloading the ISO once and then install it on all machines would be better for me :)

Once thing I had issue with when I created my windows 8 flash drive is when I visited the page to download the thin client to download the iso, it gave two versions of the client. One for Win8 the other for WIn8.1

I tried using 8.1 client but my key was not recognized so I ended up using the Win8 downloader. Is there a way to get the client to download 8.1 for future installs?

MSDN and TechNet subscribers already have the ISO files.

April 14th release is for the rest of us little people. :)

Hello,

If, for some reason, you have trouble installing Windows 8.1 Update using your existing Product ID key, you can try using one of the keys listed in the following Microsoft TechNet Library article: Appendix A: KMS Client Setup Keys.

There are, however, two important limitations you should be aware of when using one of the PID keys from the above article:

  1. First and foremost, the KMS Client Setup Keys provided by Microsoft in the above article only allow you to install the operating system.  Once the operating system is installed, the computer will boot to the Desktop, but Windows will not be activated/unable to activate using Microsoft-provided PID key.  You will need to enter your own legally-licensed PID key to replace the one used from the above article.  Basically, the keys provided in the article are for getting you through the install process should your existing PID key not validate correctly at install time.
  2. The Microsoft-provided KMS keys only work with business versions of Windows operating systems, such as Windows Vista Business, Windows 7 Professional, Windows 8 Professional and their various Enterprise SKUs.  If you have a home edition of a Windows version, like Windows Vista Home, Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 8, or one of their various Ultimate SKUs, the PID keys won't work.

Hopefully, you won't need to use one of the keys from the above article to get through the install process for Windows 8.1 Update, but if your Windows 8 Professional PID key doesn't work, this should allow you to get up and running to the point where you can get the key correctly entered, or at least contact Microsoft support for help activating your copy of Windows.

Regards,

Aryeh Goretsky

Your key will not work during re-install. Use a placeholder/installation key as provided by goretsky and then activate windows by either swapping the key back to your original or restoring your activation files.

Devhead is wrong anyway, the Windows 8 serial doesn't work with Windows 8.1, I already downloaded an 8.1 iso and it wouldn't accept it. Hopefully the new iso will.

Actually the do work for activation but when installing from the ISO you need an 8.1 key or what most people just do is use a generic key then once installed use the Windows 8 key to activate. I have done this myself just last week with my Windows 8 key and it works fine.
