USB stick and SSD

Recommended Posts

I installed an OS on a USB stick and installed Windows 8 on my htpc for reasons I won't get into. The OS on the USB stick scrubs significantly slower than it did on the SSD. is that normal, are USB sticks just slower than SSD?

Generally yes. But it depends on the USB stick and if you are using USB2 or USB3. The cruzer extremes can get over 200MB/s read/write. SSDs generally are in the 500MB range.

If you are using a slower USB stick on USB2 ... you might be in the 5-10MB/s range.

No details in your post so hard to tell.

I think it doesn't really matter if it's an USB2 or 3 stick - they are both slower than an decent SSD (of course it depends on the SSD as well). I might be wrong tho.

Sorry, yes it's USB 2.0. I actually don't remember if this system I built has USB 3.0 ports. You guys have helped answer my question though. I'm using OpenElec on a USB stick but everything is so slow compared to the win 8 version on my SSD.
