Recommendations for a Webcam (Video Conferencing use)

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

So I've been asked for work to setup an 'el cheapo' system for Video Conferencing between offices. I'll most likely just be utilizing Lync as the software for this but I just need some help with getting ourselves some decent webcams for both meeting rooms. I've been looking around at some cheap but decent webcams with "good audio" capabilities and I've spotted the Logitech HD Pro Webcam C920 and the Microsoft Lifecam Studio. Does anyone know if those are good options? or if perhaps I should spend some more for something far better?

Any suggestions would be welcome or any tips and tricks for getting a smooth running system in place would be brilliant.

Hard to say,  "el cheapo" can be pretty vague when it comes to a company.
By el cheapo - do they mean less than $100, or less than $1000 ?

The logitech stuff above $50 is a great solution for end users, if it has a full-duplex mic - then I'd say its good for what you need.

Being full duplex is necessary because nobody likes it when 1 person talking keeps the other person from being heard/talking.

Good point, I should have clarified 'el cheapo', Basically it's up to about $200 maximum. (Will probably end up going over I'm sure)

Honestly didn't even know that about full-duplex, that is excellent help thank you!

Basically, any Logitech webcam from the C51x up should be solid for nearly any use - the C515 is my floor recommendation (to be replaced by the C525 when the C515 finally goes away, as the C525 replaces the C515).

Pluses - the C515 and C525 are not pricey; typically they are around $USD50, even when not on sale, and can be as low as $USD30 on sale.  Even better, they are UVC-compliant, and will work in any OS - including OS X and Linux distributions as long as the USB port they are connected to is supported.)

Minus - the only minus is they sell out quickly when on sale, therefore retail availability can be a problem.

These my great as personal webcams but for a room webcam you need something else.
