Dutch police arrest 14-year-old girl who tweeted alleged Al Qaeda threat

Recommended Posts

AMSTERDAM ?  Police in the Netherlands have arrested a 14-year-old girl on suspicion of threatening American Airlines in a tweet.

Police spokesman Roland Ekkers said the girl, who has not been identified for privacy reasons, turned herself in to Rotterdam police in the company of a parent Monday and is now being interrogated.

The tweet posted Sunday said it came from an Al Qaeda member in Afghanistan named Ibrahim and threatened to "do something really big on June 1." But the account's handle came with the nickname "Sarah" and a profile image of a young woman.

Apologetic tweets were posted to the account after the airline replied it was taking the threat seriously and calling in law enforcement.

Ekkers said the motive for the tweet is not yet known.

I saw somebody share this on Google+ yesterday before she turned herself in, just an image of the conversation, and I wondered what if anything would come of it.

Her dad should have shot her her in the toilet instead of her mom.

That's a fairly ######ed up thing to say frankly. She's only 14 and obviously just had a misguided attempt at comedy.

The kids may look smart than they look but... the parents must teach the kids about right and wrong before kids go out in public or get on the internet.

That's the reason I won't let kids to get on the internet until the certain age and make sure the kids understand what the life/internet is about.

I agree.  My 11 year old niece has a Facebook account.  I bit my tongue, not my kid, just told my sister to be careul.  Should see some of the crap she posts on FB.  Not cool.  I would never let a kid that age be on Facebook or on the internet without supervision...or at least someone around.

Guy I know is dealing with  something with one of his daughters.  Long storty short, a 21 year old in CA is being charged for having child pornogragy and coercing a minor into child porn.  And since he was recording everything, if he doesnt take the plea deal, they will charge him with intent to distribute child porn which is a mandatory jail sentence.

Here is an update to the story....

A Dutch teenager known only as Sarah tweeted a dangerously stupid joke Sunday afternoon, telling American Airlines that she was an al Qaeda member gearing up for a terrorist attack in June. The airline didn't take the tweet in stride; after dressing Sarah down, it proceeded to forward her IP address to the FBI, resulting in her arrest this morning in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Now, however, other

teenagers have started lobbing bomb threats at American Airlines. Somewhat incongruously, those joking threats spiraled into an explicit photo being tweeted by US Airways in the process.

Tweets that mirrored Sarah's original tweet started coming in this morning, aimed at American Airlines (and even others like Southwest) and all as if to dare the companies to report them to the authorities.

You have to take this sort of thing seriously. It is a must.

She could have a boyfriend or online playmate that got her to do it. It's beyond stupid, it's dangerous and terroristic.

If something big happens in June, she'll really be in trouble then.

5 years in jail is her future!

^ I think she was trying to type Abraham, but she isn't well educated.

Sarah needs to be removed from computers & phones.

I actually had a friend named Ibrahim once, so it's a real name.

I agree, it could be the spark of something bigger. A division of sorts. Hammer them with "stupid" tweets, then taper off and hit them when they "think" its just teens.

14 is old enough to know whats wrong.  She wanted attention, so give her some, the legal kind.

She was using the Arab name for Abraham to go with the Al Qaeda reference.
