TSA pat down after full body scanner?

Recommended Posts

I went thru a full body scanner at an airport in usa ( I am a us citizen ) but after the full body scan I had to be patted down. Anyone else experianced this? And why? I thought the full body scanner shows you nude. I had my belt off my pockets empty I only had t shirt and jeans on and socks.

Also some airports require you to put the liquids on the small bag you have on the belt outside of your luggage case but some airports allow you to keep it inside of your luggage as long as its in the specified liquid amount and bag.

So anyone know the reason why I was patted down AFTER first body scanner? Also anyone experiance this liquid thing also some airports requiring it ousdie and some do not matter ( all these airports in usa ) just seems like things should be standard.

I am just a regular guy not causing TSA problems but just curious on pat downs when the full body scanner shows everything. If I am going to be padded down id rather save myself the radiation dose and go straight to the pat down.

My first and only time flying commercially, I was given the pat down treatment at every stop we made.  I had a SSSS on my plane ticket which I am guessing meant that I was to have this done after looking at that online.  I think I was chosen at "random" to be given the extra search.  This was before the full body scanners but pretty close to when they started using them.  I felt like it was unusual to be targeted, our suitcases were also run through by the TSA looking for whatever they were trying to find and failed to do.

I don't know if you were "randomly" chosen as well, but if you were, I would consider it a non-issue since they are at least doing their job helping with security.  :)

I was not padded down in Portland Oregon where I live but I was padded down leaving Sioux Falls SD. I dont really mind it to much unless its going to happen every time and not to other people.

Basically my whole question is I am glad they are doing their job I dont really mind it BUT I thought the whole purpose of the full body scanners was to speed up things and they can see under all your clothes so I dont see the logic of pat downs anymore. If its going to happen everytime I would rather just say I prefer padded down so I am not exposed to excess radiation.

Portland Oregon airport also said I could leave the liquids in the bag where in Sioux Falls SD say they must be outside the luggae. Thought this stuff was federal and all uniformal the same procedure.

You might have been patted down because the scanner saw something unusual. I got scanned, patted down and had my hand checked for explosive residue when I went flying the week they were still looking for that moron Boston bomber.

With that said, TSA is ok compared to what I had to go through at a French airport.

Yea TSA is not really that bad. I am just concerned about the radiation of the full body scanners but hopefully its not that much. They have never really given me any problems or had to search my bags so I am not really complaining just had a question why they did what they did. So TSA have never been over intrusive on me and at least I feel safe when flying.  Wonder what the French did to you :D ?

I have experienced a patdown after a full bodyscan, arriving and taking off from Newark Airport, NJ. I'm not an American citizen though, British.

the scanner doesn't show everything.  They have changed all of their systems due to complainants and now it is software operated and there is no person in the booth looking at your naked image.  That said, the only reason you'd be patted down after going through a body scanner is because you moved and the software couldn't resolve your image or you had so many anomalies (coins, pen, anything basically) detected that you automatically get a pat down.  The computerized system is very good but like any machine/software it's not perfect.

To the previous poster who had "SSSS" on your ticket, you usually get that if you order a ticket at the last minute, possibly paid cash for it, or maybe got a one way ticket.  Usually it's assigned to you by the airline that is selling the ticket to notify TSA something might not be right with this person.

Not only did no one check me at Canada, America or Australia but I was routinely put into a line with zero people and let into the Country without so much as a question. I don't know if it was my Canadian passport or eager childlike wonder, but no one seemed to pay me any attention. The line (#8) I was put into was empty. The lines 1-7 were very, very full.

It was more difficult getting out of Canada but only because he asked me the purpose of my travel. Not even the girl that stamped my passport had anything to say. I flew into the Australian airport and within 15 minutes I was in the Country, 10-12 minutes was waiting for my bag.

No ####ing around in Australia.  We aren't nearly as paranoid as the yanks.

I was patted down in Sydney about 11 years ago. As the customs officer was rummaging through my suitcase I asked him why he had picked me.

He said, "It's nothing personal - in training the tell us to pick out anyone who looks nervous."

I said "The reason I may have appeared nervous, is because you guys keep picking me out. (I had received similar treatment in Japan)"

I now make a point of exuding confidence whenever I'm in an airport.

I HATE that.

Once I was in Kuala Lumpur airport, in transit, at the gate about to board the plane for Osaka, and some officer got all chatty. He looked through my passport and asked why I was going to Japan. Struggling to contain my anger (for some reason this really got to me; perhaps it was his demeanor or something.) I informed him, with all the politeness I could muster, that I lived there. All the while I was thinking "What the HELL has it got to do with you? I'm only in your miserable country because your stupid airline brought me here to spend three pointless hours, instead of taking me directly to where I actually wanted to go! Why don't you mind your own damn business, give me my passport back and let me get on the plane!" (certain words have been changed in line with Neowin policy)

Kuala Lumpur airport is actually rather nice, and when I have passed through in the opposite direction it has been a pleasant enough experience.

It was probably because you can still be selected at random for those things afaik. Nothing personal :P

I've experienced the thing with the 3-3-1 bag as well, but I always just take it out anyhow.

If you'd done that, they'd probably still be searching you today! :p
