Issue upgrading to Windows 8.1

Question

I have a client's laptop which he bought used. It's pretty dated.but has Windows 8 installed and works well enough. I'm trying to update it to 8.1. I see the update in the store but when I click on it, I get:

"Update Required. Before you get Windows 8.1 from the Store, you need to install the latest updates from Windows Update."

So, naturally, I've checked and there are no more updates. The only other odd part about this that may give a clue is that this laptop had Office 2007 Enterprise installed... So perhaps this is some volume or MSDN version... But I don't have access to any of those ISOs. That's still only a guess though.

1. Is the seller of this used laptop trustworthy ?

The common practice usually is to re-install the computer that is bought 2nd hand. One never knows what the seller had done to the computer.

2. Is the Win 8 installed in this used laptop legit ?

A pirated software will not get updates from Windows.

Don't know the seller, but it is a fresh installation of Windows.

I was getting Windows Updates, there just doesn't seem to be any more to be had. It does not seem pirated.

Check to see if you have updates KB 2871389 and KB 2917499 installed

I had checked and those updates were installed. At this point, I delivered the laptop back to the client without the update. Obviously the laptop was purchased "as is" and super cheap so there is really no sense in paying me to fix it, Thanks for the suggestions though.

From personal experience....

Windows 8.0

1. There is usually 2 rounds of updates before you can even touch 8.1 with a 10 foot pole.

2. At least 2 reboots.

3. Then you have access to the Windows 8.1 update.

Things to try....

- To elaborate on what a previous poster said.... Right click the start button, scroll and click to system. This will pull up the machine's property page, scroll al the way to the bottom and see if it says WINDOWS IS ACTIVATED.

- If you haven't done so, reboot the machine, I've seen it happen where once the updates were put into 8.0, it would still not allow me to update to 8.1 and a reboot cured it.

-  Go to the control panel, in the upper left hand corner, choose under View by: pick LARGE ICONS, scroll all the way to the bottom and click on Windows Update, there click on Change settings, Under Microsoft update, enable the check box that says "Give me updates for other Microsoft products when I update windows".

       - And you might be wondering why I mentioned the last one... well, there are components added on to windows such as the Visual Studio C++ software, that could very well be considered the updates

that the Windows Store is referring to. Please try these steps out and let me know how it turns out, i'll be happy to help you in any way I can.

Best regards
