Windows XP Machines won't boot today with MSE from bad definition update

I've already seen 2 machines today that all of the sudden started hanging because of MSE. Googled it and anothers are experiencing the same thing 1 person saw 10 machines already today hanging from MSE. The one issue with MSE is it won't let you uninstall from safemode which is retarded

 

The fix

 

Boot into safe mode and disable inside Msconfig from both the services and the startup. Then reboot into regular mode and uninstall it.

4.16.2014 UPDATE 1.171.83.0 Security Essentials Virus definitions from Microsoft FIXED the Boot / Lock problem with the MS Security Essentials Virus definitions update 1.171.29.0 and 1.171.30.0. If you can not get into your computer because you loaded the Bad Version you may have to load your backup or restore prior to this day 4.15.2014. or You May be able to stop it from loading in Safe Mode. Then once you do the update from the MS Site or MS Security Essentials 'Update Tab' you will get the fixed MS Security Essentials Virus definitions update. Run a Full Scan After the fix. FYI I would Also Make Sure you do regular Backups (Daily or weekly) , I use Acronis True Image it works well. This will help you if Microsoft play's games.

Windows XP isn't supported anymore. This is exactly what many have been describing with using an unsupported OS.  

 

Isn't it a little Ironic that Microsoft's Own MSE would cause the problem. Do they really care so little about XP and the 30% market share left that they wouldn't run the Def update through a single XP machine?

Depends how much of that 30% is legit installs.

 

Just goes to show which av to NOT run on XP. ... then again i've been saying that for years :D

 

But if I saw 2 systems today I wonder just how many systems this effected.  I didn't get many calls because most of my XP customers don't have MSE.

If Microsoft has treated XP like my employer has, I doubt they have any XP machines left running on the network. If anything, they have XP behind so many restrictions that testing updates just isn't feasible. It's most likely not high on their list of things to do anymore.

So you are saying Microsoft couldn't have a SINGLE XP machine with a clean install that has never been on a website on a locked down VLAN.

I don't know. Depends on what their policies are. Our policies strictly forbid any XP machine being connected to the network. I don't how a parent company could still support software for XP, but not XP itself.

I think Microsoft has just let the wheels fall off of MSE - they openly admit it wasnt very good, & tell people to look elsewhere for an AV solution - maybe they are just not even going to sweep it under the rug.

I know this is from another thread last week, but I feel so vindicated when they admitted that - because despite all of the so-called professional reviews claiming MSE was good - I always thought it was a joke, always getting into pissing fights in here when I would say it was garbage and that person didnt know what they were talking about - it was nice for them to admit it.

Windows Defender works best with the features of Win7 and Win8. By itself, it's a poor performer. The thing with AV in general is, it's not supposed to be a front line defense. Same with Defender. It's just once piece of the larger security puzzle in modern Windows.

Thinks sticks with Avast for my WIndows 8.1 System, thought about using Defender on my last clean install, but decided against it for some reason, maybe I made a wise choice for once

How are they getting that 30%...I would bet it is a bit more because they can't count the number on closed systems...they may be able to take a hypothetical guess to inflate those numbers but I would guess that those numbers are based on what the internet sees as oses that connect to websites.

We dealt with this Today as did MANY MANY others. A definition update yesterday from MS caused the issue. If you're lucky, you have SCCM like us and you need to disable "Behavior Analysis" - may not be exact.

 

Even with SA mission critical support, MS gave an 8 hour callback Window. Not sure WTF they let happen. But if they're trying to encourage everyone to finish their 7 deployments, well played.
